One of my drinking buddies is an RN and he told me in two years at his hospital every non elderly Covid death he saw was fat, really really fat.

I never really understood why anyone was surprised by that. I thought being overweight had a proportional effect on your immune system, like the fatter you are the worse the burden on your immune system sort of deal. Not only does being fat cause illness, but the conditions that caused someone to become fat also lead to worse outcomes. People who are obese tend to have extremely messed up vitamin intake, for example, due to their poor diets. Oxidative stress compounds even worse in a person who lacks the vitamins the body depends on for the cellular processes that would otherwise clear it out.

I noticed a recent change to the coronavirus stats on the New York Times front page. In the past day or so they have added a “hospitalized” row to the tracker, which was not there before. I guess the lackluster death numbers weren’t scary enough for their “please continue to freak out about the flu, fellow libs” widget.

As to why I think this is worth mentioning - I could care less about the numbers themselves, I’m more interested in the tracker’s placement on the page and how it’s presented. I think it is a decent approximation of the left wing media’s current stance on COVID. What was interesting was there were a few days where the tracker was so low on the page, you had to scroll a handful of pages on mobile to even see it. There was even one day last month where the tracker was not there at all, which naively gave me a false hope that they had finally given up on trying to drum up the fear, but it came right back the day after.

My (again, naive) hope is that this current increase, which is supposedly huge, and yet not leading to reinstatement of any rules, is a bellwether for the media to finally give up on this. Seeing even normally dumbass Redditors in the Philly subreddit mock the four day mask reinstatement was heartening.

Unfortunately though, to be realistic, as long as this newly minted generation of clean freaks lives, anything with “COVID” in the headline will get a billion ad clicks, which is the real indicator of how long this bullshit narrative will drag on for.

I'm leaning towards (genocidal)* malice - and megalomania - being the primary motivation of the 'core', with greed (promises of wealth, status, power - and who knows what else) being how they recruit the lower, functionary tiers, and keep them on board with the program. And obviously the risk of, ahem, assisted suicide is pointed out as quite severe to anyone thinking of jumping ship.

Alex Lowndes refused to close his Gainz Fitness & Strength in Bedford in November 2020, when restrictions were imposed in England.
Bedford Borough Council's case collapsed but the authority said it had acted in the public interest.
A lawyer told the BBC she had successfully defended 23 similar cases.
Under Covid regulations at the time - the second national lockdown in England - sports venues could only open in limited circumstances, such as for the training of elite athletes.
Infection rates and hospital admission were rising in the area but Mr Lowndes said he felt strongly that gyms should remain open.

"It became clear it was an airborne disease, you're more prone to it if you're unhealthy, overweight, etc, and gyms contributed a very small amount to the spread of the virus," he said.
"From a mental health point of view, gyms are really important, people depend on them, and I think people underestimate that.

Does COVID have an end, as in a final chapter or act?
Or will it be like a movie theme that keeps spitting out sequels, each one worse than the last one, and none even close to the first movie that started the franchise? Think of Star Wars or Fast and Furious.
COVID sequels are the endless variants, starting with Greek letters, now with simply a soup of letters and numbers denoting the current strain of interest. As viruses mutate, they generally become more contagious but less lethal, as much of the population by this time has gained natural immunity from previous infection. This also serves to prolong the life course of the virus that would rather spread far and wide as opposed to killing its host, stopping spread.
COVID cases numbers are up, but what does that really mean? We see endless tweets from politicians testing positive, almost all of them fully vaccinated and boosted, feeling fine, expressing thanks for the vaccines, using almost identical verbiage in their tweets.

Has COVID become like the common cold or a mild version of the flu? While case numbers, meaning positive nasal swab tests, are rising in some areas, hospitalizations and deaths are down significantly. What does a positive test in an asymptomatic individual mean? Especially if that person has COVID immunity to some degree from natural infection and/or vaccination?
Neisseria meningitidis which is a cause of bacterial meningitis, potentially fatal in 10 to 15 percent of those afflicted, is found in the nasopharynx of 10 to 35 percent of asymptomatic adults. If we applied COVID rules and repeatedly tested asymptomatic individuals, with a quarter to a third testing positive for this high mortality infectious disease, the world would be in panic mode.
