General Discussion for Virtual Youtubers / Vtubers / Chuubas - it's okay to be a simp for 2D, just don't thirstpost.

Phase Connect has truly nailed their character designs, all of them are unique, recognizable and played by distinctive personalities, paired with great live 2d rigging work. Gen 2 better not disappoint after months of cockteasing.
As the "small corpo" scene is falling apart, their only real competition is themselves. Half their roster is Pippa + Tenma + Uruka + Lumi. That's fucking amazing. Of course they can't compete with the big two, numbers-wise, but they're better. If the next batch are even half as good, Pippa & frens are totally solidified as the "prestige" tuber company.

lol

Even after getting demodded the effects it had on thrrang's body seem permanent. Talk about getting dealt a shit hand.
Fuck you :story::story:

Question:
The number of skilled Live2D modelers capable of providing rigging work better than that seen from corporate VTuber models are increasing as of late. They have their basics down pat, make models with a large field of motion, and go to the effort of doing their physics calculations properly.

I recall watching a video somewhere that good modelers are hard to find, but I believe there is a significant number who at least meet the standard of corporate models. Some of them have already built a significant reputation for themselves in the industry, and sometimes I can’t help thinking, “I’m sure so-and-so modeler would’ve done a much better job” and feeling disappointed when looking at models from large agencies.

With all that in mind, my question is, why don’t VTuber agencies hire these modelers to make better models for their talents?

Answer:
One reason why agencies don’t hire skilled modelers is due to a discrepancy in lead time and pricing. Lately, some private modelers have been charging higher prices for their work. Rather than saying that agencies are cheaping out, it’s more that they are limited by obligations to provide models for all their talents using a budget that would ensure that they still turn a profit.
On lead time, it’s only natural that indie VTubers are far more flexible. An indie can go, “I want so-and-so to do my model, and I can wait as long as it takes,” but it would be a problem when an agency plans on releasing new outfits for multiple talents but one single person’s model is behind schedule. It can be said that a high quality model for an indie is a unique masterpiece made in exchange for lead time and pricing.
Conversely, a model made for an agency requires a certain quality within a specific lead time and price. I believe this difference is a big reason why work offers sometimes don’t work out—it’s not only that agencies don’t reach out, sometimes modelers may be turning down offers as well.

Second reason is that said modelers with a reputation probably already have packed schedules. By “packed,” I mean they’re probably not available until a year later, so there’s a bit of lag between when an agency reaches out and when a modeler can actually start working on the offer.

Lastly—this being something relevant only to agencies with a lot of talents—agencies cannot have some talents with exceptionally good models and some with remarkably worse ones. They must match the other models with their best one, to a certain degree. As such, agencies set strict regulations to maintain uniformity on the quality of their models.
In other words, what is required of modelers working for agencies is skill and ability to work according to guidelines. Those making models for indies vary from person to person—at risk of being overly candid, they’re basically doing whatever the heck they want (lol). Working for an agency means doing the best possible within the restrictions set forth by the agency.
In a way, it can be said that those making indie models and those making corporate models are working in entirely different fields. That’s how different the requisite skills are. Some modelers are more suitable to one field over the other, and I’m sure agencies take that into consideration too when considering who to approach. Of course, neither is “better” than the other—both are professionals and masters in their own right.

In short, to answer “sometimes I can’t help thinking, ‘I’m sure so-and-so modeler would’ve done a much better job’ when looking at models from large agencies,” please understand that that model was made under conditions that might not be compatible with the tracking software, lead time, and/or pricing of certain agencies.

Of course, I’m sure the large agencies are aware of all this. Although they have a lot more things to consider and work through, they’re still doing their best to gradually raise the bar through releasing versions 2.0 and 3.0 of their talents’ models. When I see this happening, I find myself impressed with all the work that must have gone on behind the scenes, both from the agency’s management and the modelers involved.

There is one last thing I want to say, as this is more something for the industry as a whole to work out. This situation where indies having higher quality models than corporates is also due to Live2D models being too cheap. Though the same phenomenon can be seen for 3D models, it’s not as blatant. Currently, Live2D models are at a price range where an individual can purchase one if they splurge somewhat, even ones that take as much—or even more—effort than 3D ones. To be blunt, there are a lot of very talented Live2D modelers who are charging prices that are too low to support the work they do. They will wear themselves out one day. I did.
This industry greatly appreciates the work of its artisans but wears out said artisans with its demands, and I do not think that is healthy. I currently have a strict pricing system based on the number of work hours needed. Some of my more expensive projects reach millions of yen, but I honestly think even this might be too low. If I am to truly consider the industry at large, I probably should be raising my prices further.

...While writing all this, I found myself doing a bit of introspection as well. I’m ending this thread with a bit of self-admonition. m(_ _)m

P.S. There are those who suggest that worries about compliance might also be a factor, and you would be entirely right too! Approaching a new indie creator also carries a certain amount of risk. This is also a large reason why agencies tend to work with the same names over and over again!

At this point i want the pomutori collab to happen so you fucks can stfu about it and stop timelooping the thread with the finger pointing faggotry that is that discussion.

Nah i would classify corpos into big, medium and small leagues.
  • Big league is obviously the industry leaders, Holo and Niji, upd8 would also be here if they hadn't fucked themselves over.
  • Medium league is shit like Noripro, Vshojo, Neoporte with hal's popularity backing it, VSPO, 774's subsidiaries and others that are established.
  • Prism, Tsunderia, Phase connect, Kawaiipro and many many others i would classify as small league.
Vshojo technically is Big even though I don't really consider them a "corporation". They are more of a brand popular ENVtubers grouped themselves into more than anything.

Now that sony owns prism. I want a mona and shiki collab. Dog and sheep can never go wrong.

And the fact that i don't think the other verse vtubers speak much English at all.
I think Itsuki can speak pretty competent English, though I haven't watched a lot of her streams.

The only thing I can assume with this is that it has something to do with Niji and the Chinese market. I don't understand why either side would give a fuck. NijiJP and HoloJP have no issues collabing if they want to. NijiEN may have more CCP losers watching them than JP.

Even that all is a stretch, idk.
I feel that's a stretch too. I get the sentiment, but chinks only watch Luxiem and Noctyx in NijiEN. The girls there isn't as big, so I feel like the EN holo girls and the niji girls should be good to collab. I still understand why they're holding it off though. It's been a fucking year already.

That's just an anti-dust jar, right... Right!?
Well...at least Pippa won't collect dust in the jar! Same can't be said for other things... (:_(

Ooooh a cute anime sheep playing Fnaf game while speaking English, I gotta watch this!
I had fun playing it but god was it buggy as hell at launch. Could use some more content too with how short it is as well. Wasn't much side things to do in it besides the main objective.
