Part of me thinks this is revenge for them flipping Alito the bird back during the election and all the shit they've done since. Give them an option and they'll slaughter your sacred cow that only exists because of bad legal reasoning. Alito's opinion taking aim at Obergefell is likely a shot across their fucking bow that if they don't knock their shit off, he will take all the Progressives badly reasoned toys away.

For fuck's sake, just pass gay marriage through the legislature. You might have 4 senators dissent. Or just make all states recognize all licenses issued by other states. Totally not just saying that so I can carry guns in blue states.

What? Give actual power to the Full Faith and Credit Clause? And make states recognize other states' CCWs? Impossible!

Hell, I'd just take restoring the meaning of the Privileges and Immunities clause of the 14th Amendment. Rather than just meaning people can travel or go to federal courthouses in their states.

It's better to have an enemy in front of you than an 'ally' in the rear that will stab you in the back at worst moment. Romney types play along until the last minute and then sabotage, setting everything back to zero. McCain campaigned on repealing obamacare, played along until the critical vote and stabbed voters in the back. That pretty much killed of any momentum of repealing it. That is the purpose RINOs serve.
