'No Stupid Questions' (NSQ) Internet & Technology Edition

Corsair should be A-OK with Jon Gerow a.k.a. jonnyGURU being their director of PSU engineering.
Corsair is good, but EVGA and their 10 year warranty will always be king.
Based on speculations 850W should be enough for a 4070. If the 4080s and 4090s keep the tradition of high transients and fluctiations, well, you'd better get a 1200W Platinum piece.
I wouldn’t buy anything under 1000w, I’ve been using a 1000-1600w since the 3rd gen i7. Using 1 video card now instead of 3, but even my 3080 / 9900k will pull 675w under load, and that’s without any OC.

Things are def not getting more power efficient.

Fug, gotta change my 850 PSU wishlist :biggrin:DD

Speaking of stupid questions, is it possible to actually build a PC where both an air cooler and liquid cooler is installed?

I mean yes and no.

You could run an air cooler on the CPU and an AIO or closed loop for the gpu, or go the other direction with an AIO for your cpu and an air cooled gpu (that’s what I currently am running). But you can’t run two CPU coolers if that’s what you meant.

Fuck me in the ass then, its either an Arctic Freezer II or a Deepcool.

Elaborate? Why would you want to mount both an air and a liquid cooler on the same CPU in the first place? There's no point to that.
I dunno, just wanted maximum cooling performance from two forms of cooling. I've always been dissuaded from trying to liquid-cool (despite me trying to convince them that it can work). That said, Deepcool is very reliable so there is that.

In most cases liquid cooling is more effective than air cooling, so slapping an air cooler onto a liquid cooled CPU wouldn't do anything even if it was possible. It isn't however because both the air cooling tower and the liquid cooling pump unit mount using the same screw holes. If you're wary of installing a custom loop you could try getting an AIO like this.

I know it's been asked before, but are passwords managers legit and safe? I'm super paranoid about using them.

A question to French kiwis: an acquaintance of mine is dead set on taking her brain cancer patient mother to Paris later this year. Can I get a rough estimate of how much treatment would cost them even with a European Health Insurance Card? I was able to gather some information like the average daily fee of a hospital room and the reimbursement system - all of which would be several layers more complicated for a citizen from another EU member - and how they'd have to pay up front for everything, but couldn't find any hard numbers for cancer treatment.

I was browsing listings for a used Raspberry Pi 3 on ebay and I found some cheaper copycats like Orange Pi and Rock64. I did some research and they sound better than the Raspberry and may buy one of those instead, but how well is the support for those? I just want a small footprint pc as a gift for Doppelmonger Sr. to do basic stuff like filling tax reports, youtube and printing receipts. I searched for a used Intel/AMD NUC but they are still overpriced here.

What do you mean by "support?" If you mean in the OS and software sense, generally pretty good; the more established SBC vendors will include images of supported OSes on their web sites, so sticking with one of those will be a good choice as they're pretty much guaranteed to be compatible with, if not optimized for, the hardware. Typically it'll be at least one form of Linux (usually Debian) and probably an Android image. If you want to use another OS, things can be more hit and miss, but in general the more common ARM SBCs are pretty well documented and supported by any OS that has an ARM release. Check up the hardware support documents for the OS of your choice.

The Explaining Computers YT channel often reviews new SBCs and compares them to others, so I'd give that channel a look and see if he's done a video on a board you're interested in before buying to see how it stacks up.

That being said, if you're buying one for another person who's less tech-savvy, I'd make sure they're comfortable with learning a non-Windows and non-Mac desktop before buying one of these for them. Just getting a used or refurbished Windows or Mac machine will be much more usable for them if that's what they're already familiar with.

That was what I tried to mean, sorry for the vagueness!

I will try to give him one still since he is willing to learn more about computers despite his age, in a "I will stop calling to my offspring when I can not find the internet icon" way. Besides it is time to retire his old Duron(/Athlon?) PC that he rocks since 2004.

I will check the chanel you linked sounds interesting. And if everything fails, I can exchange him the SBC and turn it into a media center and buy him a used pc as you suggested.

Thanks!

I’d really keep your eye open for an earlier gen NUC, just for the ease of use that you’ll have for them with Windows. The price gouging does suck, but you might have some luck with the ASRock NUC, it was still 400$ for the 11th gen i5 w/ Iris XE vs the 600-700$ the scalpers are asking for it.

Def a powerhouse for its size, honestly worth the $ if you can find a deal.

Some EU countries have bi-lateral social security agreement where citizen of both countries will be handled by the local system. That's a bit of a weird move tho. I think le reddit would know more. r/france should be able to answer or give you directions. You can ask in english.

What's the easiest way to upload FLV files onto the Farms? Do I need to use a converter to convert them to mp4 if FLV isn't compatable?

Which currently available video converter is the best (out of the free ones)?

Thanks for the tip. On the one hand I don't want to get cancer myself. On the other I'm considering making her a personal lolcow, so guess off to le Leddit I go.
