It does take a bit of context to understand but Nick did grow his movement by cannibalizing the alt-Right in 2016-2018 and how most of the alt-Right was full of atheistic, nihilistic losers who were otherwise okay with liberal society and just hated niggers/minorities. It's not surprising that young men decided to follow a charlatan who fed them honeyed words about God and Christianity.

Its hard to explain why people believe and join a cult, Even former members of Peoples Temple have a hard time explaining.
