Mega Rad Gun Thread

helmets serve two purposes: to protect your head from bumps, and to protect your head from shrapnel and incidental small arms fire that's especially weak. it's also not trivial to shape kevlar into a small dome, as the stuff is layered and must be built up in layers to maintain strength, which is time consuming.

just get a surplus LWH or MICH 2000 or something and call it a day. you probably aren't in a position to be picky about the helmet design outside of general fitment. if you want to go high speed, you can shop around for a high cut FAST helmet and an Earmor M31H if you want the modern high-speed solution. there are also older versions of the LWH, ACH, MICH, FAST, EXFIL, and all kinds of foreign ones like the Rhinemetall/Galvion GSF helmet.
Yeah, I am looking at some of the ACH variants right now. Thanks for the recommendations, I'll give them a looking at.

EDIT: It's not that I can't pay, it just I wasn't expecting to. But still the budget friendly last generation equipment is probably what I am going to get.

ACH variants
fyi, the MICH and ACH are practically identical shells, but the MICH offers a version (TC2001 i think) with a higher cut for wearing ear protection (Sordin, Peltor, et c) under the helmet more comfortably and the MICH has a higher riding liner for air flow under the helmet making it nicer in hot climates. the ACH is overall lighter and if you want it out-of-the-box, is more comfortable from my experience and people i know using them. rather than a high cut helmet, the ACH has a special Peltor version just for it (3M Peltor Comtac ACH). two ways to do the same thing.

You ask that question here, of all places? Look, I know you are just trying to make a point, and it is well received. Of course I am no SWAT member or military, but I like having and training with a lot of the equipment the boys play with. Odd are good that if I had to strap on a rifle and body armor to defend myself, I have to worry about head trauma too.

The last helmet I got was a Golf War Surplus K-Pot PASGT. It was like 100 bucks a dozen years ago. It's alright, but I wanted something newer with updated protection, and a better cut for ears integration.

I thought looking at new production helmets would be two to four times more expensive, not six to twenty times more expensive. I guess I am just one of those foolish old men they make fun of when they reveal the inflation prices of the house they bought 40 years ago.
Honestly, the biggest limiting factor for consumers has been that manufacturers and distributors have historically not dealt with us. The last helmet I seriously looked at was from Avon. Who the fuck is Avon you might ask? It ain't the makeup people. Nope, they bought 3M's ballistic protection division a while back. As a company policy they only sell to MIL/LEO afaik. Their line of helmets comes from 3M and you used to be able to find them under different listings from vendors who may or may not have sold to a civvie.

3M would sell to us, but their inventory generally went through LEO distributors who may or may not have been a pain the ass about selling to civvies. And guess what, those 3M helmets were from Ceradyne, who 3M bought, and had been available to GOV/MIL if you provided a purchase order on letterhead or whatever for a long ass time. Of course Ceradyne, 3M, and Avon aren't selling those helmets under the same name or specs. Customer service reps would get confused when asked about it.

So much of the armor/NVG/thermal/unobtanium game is so fucking limited run and homosexual that I hope everyone involved get throat-fucked to death for even having consumer facing sellers. You can't ever buy the gear. It's glowniggers all the way down and I'm drunk and angry REEEEEEEEE

tldr: Find a friend who can provide LEO authorization from an Avon vendor if you want a quality lightweight helmet between like 5-$900. M ore money = less weight.

Flashbangs are the same way. Perfectly legal to have, nobody will sell to non-LEO
Where is the justice?

You'll be much better off getting a skateboard helmet or something like a ProTec, dude. Unless you're taking shrapnel, you have absolutely no reason to blow money on a ballistic helmet. I mean, it's your money but all you're going to be spending it on practicality wise is the look. It that's what you want, you can buy a tanker helmet off eBay and mount a nvg mount to it

Well you already have a PASGT, the ACH/MICH helmets are all still IIIA just like the PASGT as far as I know, so it's not like it's any more protective (it's less protective given that it covers less area, in theory). I dunno anything about it, maybe someone else is a bit more familiar with working with it (I know kevlar loses effectiveness as it gets beaten up) can comment on it, but could you just cut it cleanly with a wafer wheel or something and just modify the old PASGT to fit whatever shit you're trying to put on your ears?

Out of curiosity are you bidding on an old pencil barrel model with the blade front sight, or one of the ones that were made after they transitioned to the trident front sight and with a thicker barrel?
It's a newer model with the thick barrel. Black synthetic too.

Jesus Christ
Not even he can help in this case, I'm afraid.

Thread tax, Canik SFX Rival I picked up today. This thing fucks. Hands down the best trigger I've ever felt on a striker fired gun, let alone a stock one. Hell, I'd say it's even nicer than my SP-01, and I didn't think you could beat that trigger without breaking into four figure territory.

In legal news, the Ninth Circus actually ruled in favor of gun rights in California, of all places.

TLDR they struck down the prohibition on selling semiauto centerfire rifles to those under 21 but above 18. Previously, an 18-20 year old could, with a hunting license, buy shotguns, non-semiauto centerfires, and any kind of rimfires. They were barred from semiauto centerfires.

But now they can.

That gives me some hope for the country. If fucking California can give favorable rulings to 2A, maybe the rest of the country isn't as fucked.

Is this like the mag ban overturn, where they'll just send it to a different judge and get it re-overturned?

From my understanding it was two Orange Man-appointed justices plus a Clinton justice in dissent.

So I assume they'll try to form an en banc panel (where there's a better chance to get more anti-gun justices on the panel) to kill it.

It's nice to know Cali has more good judges than just St Benitez the Based.
