China's response confuses me. Because the rest of the world has virtually opened up, but China is still in lockdown mode. Wouldn't that impact their own economy significantly? What's the endgame there? I mean the first time I could see it as a good opportunity to disappear dissidents. But now, I'm just scratching my head.

I have heard that part of this is a tactic by China to satisfy internal customers and finance at the expense of external customers and finance. There has been a not insignificant amount of talk that a lot of the factories in these cities are still running, but the products are being shifted to cover internal shortfalls. Everybody kind of forgot about it at this point, but there is a massive wave of bankruptcies and liquidity shortages currently going on in China.

Covid merely being the excuse to stiff the outsider.

FBI-related shit uniquely frustrates me. Not in an anger sense but in the sense of knowing that the FBI will never be gutted and this will likely be the mostly unopposed precedent for doing even more ridiculous and overbearing shit further down the line.

It's very easy to make bad guesses about why something happens in China but it feels like a gambler continually doubling down to regain his losses to me. I think Xi also worries about what might happen to the Chinese healthcare system if the government doesn't keep rolling out these massive quarantines to literally lock people inside their homes.

The funny thing is in decades past, this was not an inappropriate tack for such organizations if you were interested in maintaining a functional nation-state. It's only in recent years that the Establishment and its institutions have been actively attacking the foundational principles of the Western society, all because "they know better now".
