All romance genres are sorted that way in Japan, American political groups that stopped being genuinely active in the 90's probably unknown to the coiners. GL is Girls Love and NL is Normal Love, aka straight romance. LGBT activists in fandom spaces in Japan have been trying to change it to HL aka Het Love.
