Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

Chuck Jones, meanwhile, was less than amused.

Understandable, really. But that's nothing compared to the (also understandable) white-hot hatred he had for Space Jam.

And then he died six years later. Imagine, one of the last things you get to see with your characters in it being motherfucking Space Jam. The unbridled horror.
Chuck was always protective of his work. I remember reading that the reason Robert McKimson was promoted to director when Frank Tashlin left Termite Terrace for good was because Chuck and Friz Freleng wanted to protect their interests, and McKimson wasn't the kind of person to step on anyone's toes (which is ironic when you look at his work, especially his pre-1955 work).

Speaking of 70s parodies of Bugs Bunny:
Though I guess "parody" is sort of a stretch; if the credits are any indication, the producers actually got an official license from Warner Bros. to use him, and even got Mel Blanc on board to do the voice.

One of the writers was interviewed and gave an explanation for the gag - it was a joke on how old cartoons often had inter-species relationships. Chip had a thing for Gadget in the old show; Roger Rabbit was married to Jessica; Horace Horsecollar was Clarabelle Cow's boyfriend - and even outside of Disney stuff, the Ninja Turtles all had crushes on April O'Neil.

You can see the problem here. If they're a couple, and they do what couples do, what would come next? What would Roger Rabbit's kids with Jessica look like? Well, it would probably look... something like that.

At least with that stuff, all characters were either similar or, in the case of human and animal, the animals were humanoid.

Sounds like either a weak excuse or another example of them being over cynical. Dunno which.

Also, I found out not only were their writers from SNL, but also from HIMYM, which had one of the more infamous “shit the bed” endings.

The joke doesn't work because in none of those example there was an "end" result to those pairings. As I explained in the "Disney General" thread: the whole purpose of the "joke" was to be disturbing and cause discomfort. The whole movie carries a cynical and mean spirited undertone throughout, (The Washed up Peter Pan plot that itself has the undertone that mirrors Bobby Driscoll's tragic life.) You just feel bummed out after watching the movie.

There is a very simple and elegant solution and other shows have done it:

Just have the kids take after the mother or the father, no weird mixes (disregard the goldfish, he's adopted).

Not sure if those were posted yet.
Really, what the fuck did they think pairing her with fucking Zipper?

I didn't have as much attachment to Rescue Rangers as these people I liked it when Monterey Jack yelled "CHEE-EEE-EESE!" but I had to wince along with them.

Hatred for this film will unite humanity. Level plan of Ozymandias.

One's an affront against God and nature, stitched together by a man with an inflated ego and superiority complex who thinks he knows better than everyone else.

The other's a giant squid made by Adrian Veidt.

Similar creative process too.

Chuck Jones, meanwhile, was less than amused.
"He was very conservative and did not like what I had done to his characters and did not offer me a job."

Yeah, what 'other people' did to 'his' characters.

I guess Space Jam had its good points after all.

Oh, I almost forgot. I searched for images of that wretched fly thing for the meme and tripped over a bunch of others.

I mean, look at them. Sweet, innocent little kids cartoon characters. What the fuck do you have to go and fuck them up for? What's the end goal?

My grandmother (gigantic Disney fan, her favorite is Mickey but she loves all the "classic" characters) was over the moon to hear that Chip and Dale were going to be in a movie after not seeing them outside of parts of Walt Disney World for a long while. Had to break it to her that she really wouldn't like this movie. She's someone who despite saying that Walt had a lot of faults and wasn't perfect, she loves how he unapologetically loved schmaltzy sweet shit and made movies like that. A cynical half-baked parody like this is just going to bum her out.

I may be the unpopular opinion in this thread, but I personally don't really mind if cartoons want to have same-sex hand holding or non-explicit displays of affection such as this, where I get really annoyed, however, is when I hear twitter and news articles and fandom gatherings gush about it like it's a ground breaking thing. Or when people engorge themselves with awkward fixations on cartoon couples for shows that are usually marketed for a younger demographic who doesn't even know what the hell coupling is.

I prefer the I Am Weasel solution, where Weasel had a human wife in one episode and half-human, half-weasel hybrid kids.

This cannot be overstated enough; social media, journalists and rabid fans and shippers ruin any discourse about animation by constantly centering everything about romance and representation, at the exclusion of just about anything interesting about animation. It makes glad this culture wasn’t around in the 90s and 00s.

With that being said, the only thing that really weirds me out isn’t the kiss itself but how much care was put into it. They straight up got one of the animators from Rise of the TMNT to make sure the teenage lesbian kiss was extra animated and fluid. Sounds even weirder when I type it up.

because it's referring to disney as opposed to browsing porn when you type it.

Frankly I'm just glad it means Owl house is almost over, the sooner it's relegated to the animation graveyard the better...not that people wont stop talking about it for a while.

These people were around back then. It's just that they stayed in their own places.

Obsessive shipping has been a thing long before the Internet or mainstream gay shit. See Gadget from Rescue Rangers for the most recent relevant example. I haven't seen any show having any actually any inappropriate content in itself. But then you go on Twitter and you have adult fans, and often the shows writers, arguing and obsessing over shipping kid characters it comes off as creepy regardless of the orientation of characters.

The hypocrisy of it bothers me too. They'll screech about how all bronies are pedos for liking a show about magical ponies meant for girls, but then will obsess over underage human characters to a far worse extent than I've seen from most bronies.
