I've always had a suspicion with the left-handed thing that the reason it became more prevalent is because we actually started tracking it as a statistic and collating that data over time. Nothing to do with punishing left-handed kids, it just didn't matter because 99% of them were going to end up working in factories, fields or down the mines anyway.

Conversely, the exponential growth of self-diagnosing trannies in the last 5 years can easily be linked to the drastically reduced barrier to entry for being trans, plus the social power that comes with it.

So in a sense, I guess they're right and it is because of a reduction in persecution: We've stopped persecuting men who force themselves into women's spaces (and onto women, for that matter) and instead applaud them; absolute mystery why we see a marked uptick in True & Honest trans lesbians as a result...
