General Wrestling Discussion

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
The card for Double or Nothing is a mess.

  • The Hookhausen Pre Show Match is, admittedly, kind of fun. I don't remember being this invested in a PreShow match, and its even sadder that I am more excited for said match than I am most of the main card. Obviously Hookhausen wins.
  • The TBS Title match is random. I think Cargill is a great attraction they've developed and I like Anna Jay enough, but there is no story here and a title change is impossible. Its just filler
  • The Death Triangle Vs. House of Black SHOULD be AEW's version of The Shield Vs. The Wyatt Family. As is, AEW has so many stables and groups, that this thing just got lost in the shuffle. What's even the story? One dark and spooky group doesn't like the other? OK. The match itself could actually be a bit of a sleeper hit, but they could have made this a top attraction and instead, it just feels like filler. House of Black is afforded the most protection of the two groups, so they will likely win.
  • For the Owen Hart tourney matches, the finals for the men will most likely be Cole Vs. Joe which is...fine, I guess. Personally, I don't care about Joe all that much anymore. Cole should win.
  • For the Women's Brackets, I can tell you the Finals will suck because they are doing Britt Vs. Toni in the Semifinals on Wednesday. The comparison I will make is that King of the Ring tourney where Jericho Vs. Angle was in the first round. Once that happened, the rest of the tourney was fucked. Well here, Britt and Toni are the two top girls and that would be the ideal finals. Since that's not what's happening, you create a lackluster finals where either the star talent obviously wins, or it'll be stupid if she doesn't. I mean if Ruby or Statlander beat Britt or Storm, I'll roll my eyes.
  • 3 Way Tag Title Match will be a pinball match where all six guys just bounce around. I guess its neat having powerhouses like Lee, Hobbs, and Luchasaurus in there to keep it from being a complete flippy floppy match, but its going to be mindless action from bell to bell. Champs retain methinks.
  • Thunder Rosa Vs. Serena Deeb for the Women's Title is another one that feels like it should be a really good match but outside of the promo on this week's Dynamite, it has virtually no story. I like Deeb and I felt she was underrated during her main run in WWE, so hopefully she gets to shine here, but I don't think there will be a title change or anything. Champ retains.
  • Hardys Vs. Bucks...ok, these two teams had an awesome Ladder Match in ROH on the WrestleMania weekend where they made their return at Mania. It was a hell of a two night showing for the Hardys, but that was a few years ago, and Jeff looks downright awful now. Honestly, it looks like the hellacious bumps finally caught up with him. Because of that, I don't think we'll be getting the all time classic that this is meant to be. Bucks will likely do most of the work and hopefully get the win, but I don't expect much here.
  • Jericho Appreciation Society Vs. Blackpool Combat Club in Anarchy in the Arena Match...whatever that is. So I'm confused. Are Kingston, Santana, and Ortiz with BCC now or are they merely teaming up to take down a mutual enemy? That wasn't clear to me. Anyway, this will be the wild free for all match on the show and will likely be fun given who is involved, but again, the build up hasn't grabbed me.
  • MJF Vs. Wardlow is not official yet, but come on, we know its going to happen. This has far and away been the best feud in AEW heading into this show. Wardlow is honestly the hottest face in the company right now. I say he wins and then get booked on the path to getting a belt sooner than later.
  • Punk Vs. Hangman for the title feels like a main event done out of obligation. Punk is a star they want to use for the card and Hangman has nobody else lined up to face him so....here it is! The match will probably turn out well but I am nowhere near as excited as I should be for a main event.
And it is also worth noting that a ton of significant names are left off the card, including Darby, Sting, Sammy, Scorpio, FTR, reDRagon, and either Britt or Toni. I'm not arguing that everybody needs to be on every PPV, but it seems weird that FTR and reDRagon got left out while Team Taz and the Swerve/Lee team are in the title match. It seems weird they are doing a Hardys/Bucks match at this stage, when I'd honestly rather see The Bucks go up against Sting and Darby. It seems weird that either Britt or Toni will get left off the card while Anna Jay and either Statlander or, God help me, Ruby Soho got on.

I think part of the issue is that during the build up to this show, we had the ROH purchase and the NJPW joint show announcement. This saw an influx of new titles and talents being crammed into the show, derailing the direction for this event, and making everything kind of a mess.
The show looks like it's going to be a clusterfuck - though I'd argue that if they're pulling "Lethal and Co injured Joe's arm", we might be seeing Cole vs O'Riley again, which'd explain reDragon not having anything to do - but AEW has managed to deliver on most of their PPV's being worth the money. Did the RoH purchase and NJPW Joint Show throw a lot of things up on the air, definitely, and the show's definitely suffered for it.

I just wish Hookhausen was on the Main Card - there's a sentence that feels weird to type - and I hope that Punk wins. Hangmans title reign has been a lame duck, there isn't really a hotter act, that isn't currently involved in a team. that they could put it on, guy being a sperg on Twatter aside...

The PPV is very clearly an afterthought now that they've got their NJPW crossover show coming up in June.

It might turn out to decent but the announced card is pretty fucking weak. The only way it could be any good is if every belt changed hands. Have Starks and Hobbs be tag champs because they are over as fuck despite being heels, have Deeb destroy Rosa because she's been boring and has done fuck all with the belt, have Punk beat Hangman and lean fully into the "i knew you were only an indie shitter" angle.

AEW tends to get into a lull at some stage between PPVs but this has been the most obvious one. There's a whole bunch of wheel-spinning when Omega isn't there and they put the belts on the fan favourites. Their fans love the chase but instantly give up on the flavour of the month once they win the big one.

Should be a bunch of belt changes to shake it up. I'd be fine with Jurassic Express dropping it. Thunder Rosa was a babyface on the hunt who beat baker in two hardcore matches definitively, let somebody like Statlander go after Deeb. Hangman for me has delivered in the ring but the run was as champ was meh and he felt like an afterthought champ. Punk as a champ is as good a guy as any to get the belt off him. If there's a bunch of retentions this was really a filler/treading water PPV.

so what's the crazy versions out there of Owen's death, like "Sullivan killed the Benoits and framed Chris while sacrificing them to Satan" levels
I've read one nut job say that Owen was a sacrifice for Vince and that Vince is a Freemason. Owens death was to pay for the destruction of WCW.

3/4ths of the AEW PPV feels rushed with one match feeling like it wasn't meant for this PPV (Punk/Hangman). Death Triangle vs Black feels like filler and "well Rey is healed so here's this match finally so um enjoy?"

Seems to me that they're just upset that they become a laughing stock and that even Wrestletalk is more trustworthy.
I just find it funny that most of these wrestling news sites just quote whatever Dave or SRS report and call it a day - it’s literally just “copy paste what they say, add some of our shit to it”. RSN just happens to like spinning their own shit out their ass that almost always winds up being untrue.

RSN's account claims they were offered $3m

What set this off? Probably this...

Now that I think about it, I did it think was kind of weird all the dirtsheets were acting coy that Punk MAY show up in Chicago instead of flat out saying 'yes, he's signed with AEW and will appear on this show'. They're not exactly known for keeping info to themselves, especially something this important...and Fightful flat out publishes Raw and Smackdown segments ahead of time.

Steph has a myriad of reasons to step away and the means to do so. She's held a very high level corporate position for over 10 years without a break in career. Burnout is absolutely a thing and maybe she's experiencing it? Maybe she saw her oldest kid is entering their junior year of high school, an age where kids are starting to look at colleges, and she wants to be there to help make a good decision/accompany them on college tours? Maybe she wants to be with her husband who had a near-fatal heart attack?

She has her reasons and we likely will never know it.
Reading your reply then seeing Vince's face next to it made me think Vinnie Mac would see all this shit as even more weakness on Trip's part. If Hunter was/is depressed or saddened by his life situation to the point Steph has to take time off to support him plus the kids at home it's not a good look for old-timers. Mental health can eat a dick for all they care.
Depression is on the same level as "the dog ate my homework" to old school workaholics.

Lucky for Trips he's not sad enough to miss work though. Good for him.

There was a take on the situation on Konnan's podcast that sort of made sense: her position as Brand Officer is kind of outdated since it involves making deals with other companies...and we know Nick Khan is taking over for her in the interim. He's been instrumental in getting some of the odd yet lucrative deals like advertising that Netflix zombie movie for a million dollars. Plus she's been working almost consistantly for the company since 1999 (Cornette remembered her interning there before he left for Louisville). She'll need some time to reevaluate where she'll be in the company by the time she comes back in addition to all the above about her family.
