President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

I know I have a better chance of winning the lottery or Japan making Catgirls real than this POS limping out of port in fighting condition but man would I love to see the first Aircraft Carrier wartime loss since WW2.

Unlikely. The Kuznetsov is in Murmansk, on the arctic coast. It's highly unlikely they could get it through the bosphorus without a confrontation; if they try and force the issue with the turks, they'll be inviting a NATO response. Russia doesn't want that. Or maybe it does...

Even if they do get it through, the last time the Russians tried to use their carrier in combat, it killed a bunch of its crew and then broke down.

Ah. I don't know why but I assumed their carrier was assigned to Crimea.

Shipments of grain are priced from port facilities. Whoever sent that ship there bought the grain at whatever the price was at that port in whatever amount.
Yep. Commodities at the international trade level are priced Freight On Board. Farmers eat the basis at the elevator, but exporters charge for it on the way out.

Last time they tried to repair it, the drydock sank.

And it nearly sank the ship with it. Tore a 15m hole in the side; if it'd been lower, it would have sunk the whole damn carrier which would have been hilarious.

The Russians are utter failures at blue-water Navy. Only the number of missile boats they have make them a threat on the high seas, and that's not a threat to other ships, it's just a moving missile silo that's a threat to another country. North Korea can do that, for fuck's sake.

1. It cant get there because Turkey has closed Bosporus straight to all military ships (excluding turkish ships, naturally).
2. Its an incrediebly long sailng from Murmask to Black sea and there would be exactly 0 or 0,1 friendly ports on the way there where the task force can resupply.
3. Why would carrier group be dispatched to the land war if there is an adequate number of land airports? Just doesnt make any sense.
4. As mentioned above- carrier never goes anywhere without its cover- the task force group. It usually means 5-10 big mean armed ships and land based air cover where possible. And the carrier will, naturally physically hide behind other ships. If Im not mistaken Moskva war sailing alone or under cover of some bitch boats.
5. Really hard to tell if hohols would be capable to pull this one off again. I bet the success of Moskva sinking was due to the combination of US "reconnaissance", foreign moden missile and surprise.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they use Neptune missiles which are domestically produced, based on Soviet ones?
Give them some credit.

You’re correct. They knew a ship was in the area for sure; they mostly asked the US to confirm it was a warship, and which ship it was. Then two missiles later there goes a flagship.

I didnt look into it, but doesnt change the whole point. Still, none of us know and only after 100 or so years historians would start to piece together a coherent picture.

Hilarious video from Kadyrov's "real men" who can't wait for male assholes. Totally no-homo if you are the one fucking. Totally hetero to crave dude assholes if you haven't been home with your wife/sheep.

You constantly post that that this one was KIA, that one KIA ... if you are a real man, you piece of shit, come to Mariupol, my address is Metallurgov St. 73, I will fuck you in ass!

Ukrainians are now conscripting gays into their army. Yes! No worries, they will come handy to us. We haven't been home for two months.

Akhmat [Kadyriv] is strength!

And now Henry Kissinger add his pinch of salt.

Veteran US statesman Henry Kissinger has urged the West to stop trying to inflict a crushing defeat on Russian forces in Ukraine, warning that it would have disastrous consequences for the long term stability of Europe.

The former US secretary of state and architect of the Cold War rapprochement between the US and China told a gathering in Davos that it would be fatal for the West to get swept up in the mood of the moment and forget the proper place of Russia in the European balance of power.

Dr Kissinger said the war must not be allowed to drag on for much longer, and came close to calling on the West to bully Ukraine into accepting negotiations on terms that fall very far short of its current war aims.

“Negotiations need to begin in the next two months before it creates upheavals and tensions that will not be easily overcome. Ideally, the dividing line should be a return to the status quo ante. Pursuing the war beyond that point would not be about the freedom of Ukraine, but a new war against Russia itself,” he said.
I wonder if Kissinger had read the prophecies of Nostradamus?

I can't recall where it's home base is, but it's currently in Murmansk.
Lol that's the joke - it doesn't have one. The soviets built it, but not any of the shore support it required. That's why half of its boilers are fucked - the thing has been running 24/7 for the last 30 years because whenever it's "docked" it's actually just tied to the land but still powering itself. Has no home facility or capacity to be properly supported from shore.

Old man is loosing his mind, because I don't see how that would work. Russians haven't dialed down rapes or thievery, a lot of farmers are forced to work on slave-like conditions, i.e. for Ukrainians this is literally about survival on their homeland and over 80% of them feel that frozen conflict a la 2014 is a mistake and would not approve. This game ends in complete distruction of Ukraine or Russian withdrawal.

I don't like post youtube vids in an article thread but this guys goes fairly documentary like walk through a Moscow's shopping mall and a supermarket on Sunday afternoon, comparing crowds (or lack theirof) and price increases:

He is so called "good russian" or "reasonable russian" as he obviously have western friends, reads internet outside of Russia and can speak decent English (which opens opportunity to communicate with the rest of the world)

With Russians, it's just a matter of time before the "we are master race" comes out.

At the supermarket checkout, he comments that 8/10 people are "non-russians" ... it's an idiom that means non-white, non-Slav ... but also does not technically include Ukrainians nor Balts nor Belarus. Those are untermensch as well. It's hilarious because Moscow, much like a lot of parts of Russia itself is neither predom white, nor christian, nor Slav.

The other point is that Moscow is overcrowded with untermensch people who have lived there for a lot longer than some of the master "russian" race, but no matter how many Russian passports you have, how many family died for Putin, you'll always be a "hohol", "churka", 'bulbash", "black-ass" etc. Mother Russia in a nutshell from the most "reasonable" of citizens.

Minor points, he feels bad about the whole situation but traditionally Russian mentality is to be powerless and rely only on Gd and Tsar to deliver you from evil.

The longest train in the world, assuming you can even get that many grain freight cars together and the civil engineering of tracks and bridges can cope, is about a quarter that. On top of that, the Ukranians still have the legacy issue that a lot of states East of Warsaw do. The Russian awkward gauge of 5ft while most of western europe is running on the relatively global standard gauge of 4ft 8.5 inches. The Russians specifically went with this gauge for itself and among its vassals to make invasion difficult.
That's not actually the case. That 5' gauge was in common use in the American South, and Russia was advised to use that gauge by the American engineer they hired to lay their initial track from St. Petersburg to Moscow.

For a bunch of guys who should be following the Qu'ran and the Hadith these guys sure do filled with homolust.

The old dinosaur can frankly fuck off, but a collapsed Russia would make the old days of the Ukranians selling shit off look like a fucking car boot sale run by the Women's Institute in comparison. Guy still thinks its 1978 and we "need" Russia to keep hold of a bunch of people who for the most part wanted to be, and mostly are, left the fuck alone unless for cannon fodder.

May 24th; We are now officially in month three of Putin's three day war

So far the "second most powerful military" has captured Kherson, Mariupol, and a bunch of minor Donbass towns that they won't be able to rebuild

This all comes at the expense of around 30,000 men, 3,000 armored vehicles, their naval flagship, their international prestige, their trade power, their force projection, their citizen's livelihoods, the Kyiv front, the Kharkiv front, Swedish neutrality, Finnish neutrality, and their ever dwindling reserves of military grade copium

If this isn't the worst military blunder in human history then it's at least in the top ten
