Essentially, the crimes he has allegedly committed don't exist, never took place or got swept away. His consequences will never arrive, thus, he can't ever experience the catharsis that he'd perceive in being held accountable for his acts

I don't know about Midsommar. I never watched it. But the other three were warnings. In American Psycho, Bateman learns nothing from his murder spree. He's not even punished for it. He goes back to the status quo. Because everyone is so wrapped up in themselves that they don't care. So he has no arc. But that's the point. He doesn't change. He's incapable of it. He's not even human. He says so himself. In Taxi Driver, the ending is a warning about unchecked mental illness and venerating someone for inflicting violence upon others. Usually those that are willing to harm another have done other equally horrific things or worse. That Travis doesn't change. He's incapable of it. Because it's the world that's bad. Not him. The world makes him do bad things. In Fight Club, the ending was about destroying and upending a system Tyler Durden felt enslaved to. He wasn't strong enough to break away himself and he felt that everyone else was as weak as him so he created an alter ego to collapse society. He can only think of his own existential crisis. He can't see that he's the one that shackles himself. He refuses to accept that it was his weakness and not societies that caused him to be miserable and broken.

All three of those movies highlight the same theme. Those characters cannot see past themselves. They cannot empathize with anyone else. They can't think of anyone elses pain or the pain they inflict on anyone else. All they can think about is them. Their pain. Their struggle. Their persecution. And they all enact their revenge by violent and destructive means, leaving bodies in their wake. Their own narcissism, sociopathy, and unchecked mental illness is highlighted not to be a virtue, but a warning. These people aren't supposed to be liked. They're supposed to be reviled. Their actions are what not to do or emulate.
