Crime Gunman at a Texas elementary school kills 19 students and two adults before being fatally shot, officials say - yeehaw

(CNN)A suspect is in custody after a shooting incident at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, left at least two dead and injured 14 people, including students, authorities said.

The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District (UCISD) posted about an "active shooter" at Robb Elementary at 12:17 p.m. local time and said law enforcement was on site.

The suspect was taken into custody as of 1:06 p.m. local time, according to the Uvalde Police Department.
Two have died after the shooting at Robb Elementary School, a spokesperson from Uvalde Memorial Hospital told CNN.

The hospital received 13 children at their facility who were being treated for varying injuries, he said. Two children were transported to San Antonio and another is pending transfer, Tom Nordwick said.

Additionally, two patients were dead on arrival, he said. Nordwick was not sure of the ages of the two deceased. A man in his 40s was also being treated there, he said.

Nordwick did not have conditions on any of the victims.

The house I grew up in, was in a decent neighborhood of a decent town.
It was part of a Home Owner's Association.
It was in a good school district.
The house was the cheapest house in the neighborhood.
I had punched a couple holes in the walls and I was never an athlete.
One of those holes was through the cheap plastic siding from the outside.

After I did that I realized that all you needed to break in was a box cutter, IF you even needed that.
You could cut a square large enough to fit through in the siding, and kick through the drywall.
You know we still had doors on that house?
They even had locks.

Also, miraculously the house didnt take any damage at all when a tornado "skipped" directly over our house.
The treeline in front, and behind our house had a big cut out just a little larger than our neighbor's house and ours together from when the tornado had come up the hill in front and over both our houses back down to the ground behind.

Now let's also remember that we are talking about local police.

Most people who own firearms for self defense hope they never actually have to use their weapon for anything other than practice at the range. I've been a gun owner my whole life and have known other gun owners since I was born, and I have never met a single one who expressed a desire to get in a gun fight or take another person's life.

I’m sure that’s true. However, “most” people holding guns responsibly means, statistically, “a tiny few” are dangerous lunatics who either get guns specifically to go on the rampage, or have a collection available when they snap and get mad at their neighbour or their ex, or their job, or the gubmint.

I can't remember the details now (and admittedly I'm pretty sure it was in another state) but I think there was a previous school shooter case that established that basically police have no real obligation to risk their lives to save yours or stop the bad guy in a dangerous situation, because otherwise you'll get all sorts of cases where people allege that the cops weren't adequately suicidal and that if they'd only done this or that or thrown themselves in front of the bullets, everything would've been fine and nobody would've got hurt. Not legally bound to put themselves in lethal danger.

But in an active shooter scenario within the school, the gym teacher's life is in lethal danger already, doesn't matter if he runs, hides, or fights. Better chance at survival in any case if he has a weapon.

That was Parkland, and cops are not duty bound to intervene in a scenario like that. Cops don't want to die and don't have lofty ambitions to run into an active shooter scenario and get domed when they have no backup, armor, or medical help.
Small PL: Cops typically shoot like absolute garbage and the typical gun owner probably shoots as well or better if they go to the range more than twice a year. Your big city municipal cops are required to qualify once or twice per year and the test is laughably easy and cops are corrupt and will just pass people who fail. Who tf knows about small town cops' qualification procedures. Alphabet feds are slightly better overall but aren't stellar. Depending on your state, state cops are generally at a substantially higher skill level than municipal. Never saw them shoot, but allegedly the Secret Service is actually extremely skilled. tl;dr Anyone who shoots competitively in IDPA, IPSC, USPSA, 3-gun or similar is going to be at a higher skill level than about 90% of police officers.
