Crime Gunman at a Texas elementary school kills 19 students and two adults before being fatally shot, officials say - yeehaw

(CNN)A suspect is in custody after a shooting incident at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, left at least two dead and injured 14 people, including students, authorities said.

The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District (UCISD) posted about an "active shooter" at Robb Elementary at 12:17 p.m. local time and said law enforcement was on site.

The suspect was taken into custody as of 1:06 p.m. local time, according to the Uvalde Police Department.
Two have died after the shooting at Robb Elementary School, a spokesperson from Uvalde Memorial Hospital told CNN.

The hospital received 13 children at their facility who were being treated for varying injuries, he said. Two children were transported to San Antonio and another is pending transfer, Tom Nordwick said.

Additionally, two patients were dead on arrival, he said. Nordwick was not sure of the ages of the two deceased. A man in his 40s was also being treated there, he said.

Nordwick did not have conditions on any of the victims.

Actually, more specifically, there is no constitutional obligation for them to protect you. It's still absolutely legal for states or localities to separately pass laws punishing desertion or unreasonable cowardice for uniformed officers. I think it's a bit harsh to provide, say, jailtime, for refusing to run into an active shooter situation (although I can still be persuaded!), but I'd totally be down with some kind of public shaming. A ceremony stripping them of their badge.

I think the same thing about cops in, say, Portland standing around while the city burns. (I know that was subject to the mayor's orders, but those orders should be illegal)

Just caught up with the Tucker segment on the shooting... Skipping over the rest of it, something really stood out to me and I'm wondering if anyone else has confirmation. Apparently at one point, law enforcement, while not having visual contact with the suspect but while the suspect was still firing shots, instructed the kids to call out to cops. One of the kids is said to have done so and then been executed by the gunman.

Again, I'm not an expert and my knowledge of cop procedure is a blend of movies, vidya and mildly autistic reading about such shit, but I'm pretty sure it's both common sense and tactical wisdom to not do that kind of shit. If you have visual contact with the shooter, maybe, since then you can watch his movements if he does turn to shoot someone that calls out. But telling a bunch of kids to cry out like that, expecting a child to know how to know if the shooter can see them or is near them or not, while petrified with fear?

Yeah, if someone is literally shooting, the current guidelines do not include doing a student roll call. In fact, it's to ignore everything and everyone- including the wounded- until you take out the person who is, at that very moment, shooting people. However, in such situations, people sometimes fuck up. Especially if they aren't properly trained or led.

I don't know who this guy is but I'm glad he's no longer a cop and is on youtube instead. I am still hesitant to form a full opinion of events because it's based heavily on media accounts but the excuses he gives for the lack of contact are entirely unsatisfactory given this situation.

It is so hard to actually find a qualified psychologist with slots open, let alone at a reasonable price (insurance almost never covers psych. treatment). America is in the midst of a mental health epidemic and there simply aren't enough doctors to diagnose, prioritize and treat everyone.

Today, a progressive friend of mine called me, and told me all about this. To my surprise, she went on a great deal about how the cops basically let this shit happen. This was then followed by her being thankful she lived in a stand your ground state.

This incident will not be as exploitable as certain groups were hoping.
