RWBY - The Hindenburg on which Rooster Teeth rests its hopes, dreams and future

Feast your eyes.

RWBY is honestly the wrong show to slap a PG-13 rating.

And somehow their emotionally stunted manchildren simps will lap it up in spite of the fact that this rating and how they marketed the show cost them a few important good pieces of writing. Look how long it took for UOW to start thinking for once instead of falling for the obvious bait.

Slapping a PG-13 rating causes Miles and Kerry to "hold back", if you know what I mean. While Aura would have existed nonetheless, they wouldn't be allowed to show off blood/many casualties due to alienating the target audience of kids and teenagers - a market Burnie was quoted that they wanted to get into.

And it's also one of the factors why RT as a whole feels so much more ... sanitized compared to their early years. They feel ... restrained, even factoring in today's culture and their expansion. That, and their fanbase being loyal manchildren consoomers willing to screech at every minute detail, propping up the company with their merch and DVD sales - a low even by the reaction community standards.

What timeline is this? What future is this? Are any of these fools cognizant of what world they live in?

Like, the LGBT shit, whatever. Shitty story and shitty world building? Great, I like my trainwrecks to be an absolute fucking shitshow. But this? "we want a pg-13 for more money" What the fuck is this shit?

I either am too old or too out of it, but if I recall, every kid and teenager loves going into anime because they're watching something mature and engaging and growing out of watching children's shows and not watching to watch soap operas and overly talky adult shit. They love the fact that they're watching something that's showcasing scenarios that can only be won by action and struggle, that they're watching stuff meant for adult eyes, that they're going into a hardcore world of where if you're less than badass you're fucking dead on the ground. They love being treated like adults in regard to entertainment. That's why they do shit like try and watch adult rated shit.

What kind of candy ass pussyfoot faggot wuss thinking is this?

Glynda needs more booba, but it's great apart from that. Hell, it could just be an angle thing here.

RT is getting more & more bitch-made per minute.

I remember being like that back in the early-to-mid 2010s, when we were all watching stuff like Attack on Titan and The Hunger Games because we wanted to feel cool and see semi-sanitized violence. Not disturbingly gory, but plenty of blood and death to raise the stakes. I was about 16 when V3 aired, and was hype about Pyrrha dying because I was hoping for more of the same high-stakes, risky, consequential fights. I wanted "morally gray" and "difficult questions," even if they were the kiddie versions. Me and my friends discussed the plot points we wanted, like more White Fang and more to address the whole "are we heroes or are we weapons?" thing that Pyrrha's arc reflected (and is so far the only time that was reflected, though the first half of V6 almost got there). We didn't want more "everybody lives and save the day!" stories.

@TheClorax Not only that, but I dug through their Twitter account.

So basically, these are all of the earliest designs of Salem that Mupa put out, before settling for "Starving Shakira".

Salem was going to look like this - someone with generic Seer tentacles, and ... part of her thighs exposed for some reason. She also has generic bone plating on her chest. Very generic tier if you ask me.

Head and hair designs for Salem. Salem with a third eye and a darkness aesthetic is actually interesting. At least she won't have to superglue a crystal on her forehead for no goddamned reason.

View attachment 3313181

More mid-tier dress designs inspired by Maleficent or whatever.

For some reason, she always prefers drawing Salem as a starving, figure. Like, she's immortal and made of Grimm juice and stopped aging. Miyazaki made his dragonoids starving to show how pathetic they look. This just adds to it. Also, Salem doesn't age, she gave birth, so why the hell would she starve in the first place?

See what I'm talking about? The only saving grace is her normal form, along with the vertebral spine. The decorations are good, but in the end they just recycled the canon bun. At least it doesn't look like a spider's ass now. While the cutouts look fine, it's still a tad too simple for someone who's menacing and alive for over so long.
Salem in general is kinda redundant, and her role in the plot just makes everything worse.
Why did our Big Bad Grimm need to be an ancient proto-human? Why even need a Big Bad to be Grimm? I thought part of the point was tha humanity just… has problems regardless of circumstances? And if there even needed to be a Big Bad Grimm, why make it a former human? Volume 2 established Grimm get smarter as they aged, so if we really needed a lead Grimm, just make it a Grimm so old it’s gained human-like qualities.
And that way, we can have villains/antagonists from several walks of life without needing them to be idiots to justify being on the League of Generic Bad Guys.

And then V8 makes you think they’re going to do something where the real main threat is Cinder.

I uh, I'd hesitate to call it a "review" when the entire video is shorter than a single episode from V8, probably call it something like a "retrospective" or a "wrap up", but I'm also autistic so what do I know?

One thing I brought up a while ago about this design was that they wanted Salem to have all the four main girls colors, but weren't going to do anything thematic with it.

And yet Jaune is still around.
And that's why I never liked Jaune. I was a simple child.

The colors themselves are the theme, in their minds, because they have no idea how imagery works.

Now let's get this out of the way - the other artists who drew Salem.

Mixed Coffee's designs are kinda ... mid. Same color palette, but kinda bland in a different way, not improving much from the original design. Still Mixed Coffee is leagues better as an artist than Mupa "flat colors".

Next up is sh0-moo. Good lord, are those dresses heavy.

There's too much of the billowing "Disney princess/queen" dresses, which kinda defeats the point if Ray's plan has her get involved into direct combat further down the line. The color palette is alright, though.

Sun Plank's version is hauntingly creepy, up to a certain point. If the idea is to show off her deathly pale skin with red veins and her black and red eyes, covering her up with a funeral dress will fail in certain scenes, despite representing a simpler aesthetic of death.

The problem I have with some Grimm human designs is that they stick generic horns, claws, tails tentacles and bone parts and just expect the viewer to be spooked because of "shock value", without any overarching theme or design language. Such as iliac crestvein and EVdragonsoul's takes here. Ro Erod further proves my point - that's generic Monster of the Week energy plus dress work with the claws and teeth.

Floof is the best one of this bunch to make her monstrous, and redlock13 makes Salem look uniform and consistent out of this batch. Redlock's got the spirit by trying to have a minimalist version of Salem with clear symmetry and few kibble parts, while blending an almost-nude Salem using one pair of her Grimm arms as a bra and dress into a "sexy" and monstrous package.

While the eyes are a nice touch ... mika0wind's version just looks a regular Joe Blow.

Chicken Fried Bryce and BCartist are also meh in terms of design, though BCartists' coloring and lineart are good.

LumiTheHermit and MonarchBlueLady both have decent ways of making Salem look elegant, but it's more of the same, really. Lumi does impress me with the way Salem's canon concept art is imitated here in terms of style, though.

But now we get into one of my favorites: Shirilia. Salem's very original and beautiful here, just by inverting her color palette. One simple switch in color palette, and Shirilia appears to have reinvented the color wheel.

The cracking pale skin revealing pitch black darkness blends goddess, monstrosity, and beauty all in one package. No bits of random asymmetric kibble, just a uniform, clear and concise image. Hell, Shirilia can give Einlee a run for her money when it comes to making character ref sheets!

Finally, we get to my other personal favorite, WoolAndrew. His linework is fantastic, and it's a crying shame why he and Shirilia weren't made as character designers. WoolAndrew's sketch and linework detail is fantastic, his designs are minimalistic, yet still bring Salem to life. Here, Salem looks gorgeous, and actually looks like an active fighter willing to do the dirty work, as opposed to "evil queen" or "crazy monster", something that's a breath of fresh air. It's a nice balance that still reminds us that there's a human element to Salem's character and design, while potentially revealing that there's something underneath that's not quite right.

WoolAndrew and Shirilla are definitely my favorites, followed closely by Lumi's. Honestly, their designs are so above the others, I wonder why you need all these other artists. Just make these guys the main character artists and call it a day, because nobody else can really hold a candle to them. Floof's is pretty good at making Salem monstrous. He could probably be the main monster designer. Mixed Coffee and sh0-moo aren't terrible, but don't stick out as much. Sun Plank's is alright. All the others aren't special, and in fact are objectively inferior.

Looks like sane minds think alike. But nepotism, amirite?

@Rhymes 19 Do you know of any other kinds of nepotism in the server besides Floof and Mupa?

But yeah, what do you think of the other artists who drew Salem? Which one's your favorite?
I'm gonna give some layman & honest opinions on this, some of these are very good:

Mixed Coffee has a nice dress, but the tied hair seems a bit off on her. Also, most importantly, no booba. Where's the fucking nips? That shit looks off.

sh0-moo may have copied the style of Ousama Ranking. Search Hiling from Ousama Ranking to understand my point.

Sun Plank's version reminds me of TRON Legacy, which alone makes it great. TRON Legacy is probably the most aesthetically beautiful film of the whole decade of 2010's.

As for the Grimm designs, iliac crestvein just looks garbage to me. EVdragonsoul's isn't the worst, & I like the 1st Ro Erod one because skulls are cool, the 2nd one's mid tho.

Floof's is nice but doesn't feel like Salem. Redlock's is probably one of my favourites, I like the dual snake legs/lamia vibes, it reminds me of one of my favourite Transformer designs (Geewunners can Minecraft themselves, Bayformer designs were great). Also the groper bra is fucking awesome.

mika0wind's just has a weird maiden vibe. The monster design is shit.

Chicken Fried Bryce & BCartist are mid, but I do like BCartist's background aesthetic.

Mint's is pretty nice, the aesthetic vibes is great from the background & the marker work as you said is good.

LumiTheHermit & MonarchBlueLady, LumiTheHermit wins to me by the sole fact that here's give me the "Evil Mommy" vibe. That alone makes it great.

Shirilia's is very unique, it almost could be it's own new character without looking like a repaint of an old mold. I love it.

WoolAndrew's line work is great. The face in the 2nd one has a weird ikemen vibe to it, but the booba alone makes it win. Booba always conquers all.

But now we get into one of my favorites: Shirilia. Salem's very original and beautiful here, just by inverting her color palette. One simple switch in color palette, and Shirilia appears to have reinvented the color wheel.
You know what's wild? I never heard of this person or WoolAndrew.
@Rhymes 19 Do you know of any other kinds of nepotism in the server besides Floof and Mupa?
I guess my last sentence is a good example. And to be honest, the whole server was nepotism. I still have no idea how Dashie got popular. Probably similar to how I got a stream: being friends with Raymond. No one asked for me.

Isn't Paladins dying/flatlined at this point though? My impression is that they're just kind of the Overwatch alternative that most people don't play because they're too busy playing Overwatch.
It is flat lined, but flatlining at 8-9K concurrent players is not bad. Its frankly better than Overwatch, but Overwatch is a bad game so its only just an average experience tbh.

Edit: If TF2 wasn't a bot riddled broken mess, I would just suggest playing that over any of these garbage hero shooters.
