That is literally what addiction is. Even though it would deprive us of entertainment, I’d still rather see Ethan get treated for his addictions than keep slowly killing himself and calling it a good time. It’s possible for him to get well, but because of his ego, it’s far from probable.

An addict has to want to get better and that's just the first step. It's usually a long road full of plateaus and setbacks. The most successful program I am familiar with, for homeless veterans, is a holistic one that engages with range of government agencies and community partners. It tackles every aspect of their life: long term housing, physical health, mental health, finding and maintaining gainful employment, etc. All that effort results in a high success rate at one and two year evaluations. That kind of program is not available or affordable to most people.
