The original design for the pride flag commissioned by Harvey Milk for the first gay pride parade in San Francisco in the 70's was actually supposed to contain additional colors but the manufacturer Milk contracted with to produce the flags didn't have all the colors he asked for so he proposed the familiar rainbow design as an alternative.
