This is the porcupine tomato, (Solanum pyracanthos) and true to its name is in the Solanum family which is huge as it also contains peppers, eggplants, potatoes, and the common tomato. Unlike the latter, all parts of the porcupine tomato are poisonous.


Plants can be metal, too!

These things are coated in red and orange spines on both the stems and leaves, and some people plant them on the borders of their property to defend against intruders. Despite all of that, they have nice purple flowers. I would grow them myself, but I live in Zone 4, and they are Zones 9-12 as they are semi-tropical.
