So... they both win?

I'm not understanding here. Amber has to pay Johnny 15 Million; while Johnny has to pay her 2 Million?

Everything Amber said against Johnny WAS defamation, but also some stuff Johnny said against Amber was also defamation?

Am I getting that right? If not, someone explain, it got a little confusing midway through.
Evidently that's the jury's decision. I don't get it either. They're both public figures, so any claim that's "defamatory" would have to be made with "actual malice", i.e., the person making the claim knows it's not true and says it anyway with the goal of harming the other party; how does him claiming that she "conspired" to ruin him constitute actual malice? It may or may not be true, but how could he possibly know that it's not? It's a screwy decision, probably arrived at to make it appear they weren't totally picking on "poor" Amber.

It was a compromised verdict. In order to find for johnny they had to throw someone a bone on Amber's 2nd claim.

OK, thats good, but why was Amber rewarded 2 Million? I'm missing a trick here.

Couple of things. Amber's legal team consistently said the "depp waltman statements" and depp's team didn't object to it, and as such it probably got mixed in the jury's minds. Also, there wasn't much of a defense against it. And finally there was one female juror that seemed much more open to hearing Amber's case than the rest. So it's probably a compromise to get out of having to sit in deliberations any longer and be able to get back to their families and jobs.

It doesn't really make sense, because the lawyer's statements basicly said what this jury said by agreeing with depp's defamation case.

Ultimately the decision was probably a compromise, but the one that Amber prevailed on was that the jury wasn't convinced Amber purposefully roughed up the place and called twice to the cops. They all agree that Amber lied about abuse, but not that she set up the apartment and called the cops twice. Given how small the award was, though, and the fact that Adam and Johnny couldn't have known they were lying there, whoever was holding out demanded this.

Still not sure Johnny is gonna come out of this "un-canceled". Sure, he won, but I don't think Disney's hiring him back to dress up as a pirate any time soon.
Tbf, the last POTC movie did well below expectations at the box-office; he probably wasn't coming back for a sixth one whether or not he'd had to deal with Heard's bullshit.
