Even if it looked better I'm kinda sick of the whole "woooooaaaa sonic is epic and serious" thing, I would rather have it like colors where you start off right in the middle of eggman's city/amusement park and explore that, then run off to the grassy fields to head to the next area fucked by eggman or aliens or whatever the hell they're doing
To be fair, Sega has been staying away from the "epic and serious Sonic" for a good 10 years or so now, if they're finally giving him a
good story or a plot where we can see both sides of him, then it's a step in the right direction. Especially after the fumble with Forces where they tried to do the Adventure style storyline, and it turned out horrible because they were to afraid to completely commit.
I think that's one of the things that surprisingly was Sonic's strong suit, the stories and characterization of 1998-2009 made Sonic's peak year as the characters and plot really carried the franchise. The games could be mediocre when it comes to gameplay and sometimes the stories could be kinda flat, but they still had depth and meaning to them, and you'd actually care about the characters because they were fully fleshed out, and not husks like they are now.
Returning back to that style of storytelling is a great way to draw in old fans who grew up with Sonic's plot based era, and the Sonic movie will draw in the younger or new audience who will probably expect a story after coming in from the movie, in all honesty.
The problem is journalists during that time, and they still have this problem, were always overly critical and for some reason thought that Sonic shouldn't be storybased, despite the fact there's always been that aspect. Just another reason why people shouldn't get paid to write articles on games because apparently all they hire is people with the worst takes.
Now Sega's too afraid to commit to a story which leads to mediocre plots and mixing that with mediocre gameplay you get...the kinda stuff we've been getting ever since the 2010 recasting.
this game's story is being written by a Sonic fan
This might prove to go badly though in terms of direction of the series. Ian Flynn is a decent writer, but he also doesn't know how to write a lot of the characters and he tends to let personal bias get in the way which is....kinda worrying. He's not as bad as Penders, but he's also not a good person and his Sonic fanfiction before he became official? Uhhhhh, well it's honestly very telling of who he is.
Plus, he’ll probably either troon out one of the characters or make one gay out of nowhere given the way he works.
It would have probably been a better move to hire people from the Adventure age or hold an audition for a new writer, instead of just handing it off wherever. I still don't know how Pontac and Graff got hired, which just kinda shows they really need a better way to chose their members.
