That's not the "gotcha" you think it is.

Blue and Red Spheres became a staple of special stages in the Sonic universe. I EXPECT that there. I do NOT expect it from enemies/bosses that you have to kill. It was dumb in sonic 06, it's dumb here.
Dude, what the fuck are you talking about.

Sonic's moveset looks okay, as I frankly expected a complete homing attack spam levels of combat depth, but it isn't impressive if combat is a main factor of the gameplay loop. It is maybe okay, but action combat games have come a long way in the last 10+ years. I didn't expect DMC5 or something, but maybe having a moveset where I can count every move on my fingers isn't quite enough.

The DS era line circle thing looks really slow except for one time where the player seemed to accidently trigger it immediately off a homing attack or something as they made an tight circle around the enemy. That line should just be something Sonic can produce while moving to add some layer of depth of trying to fight enemies while making a full circle around them, as I always imagined Sonic as a combatant to be someone who could run circles around you while still punching or kicking you in the face at the same time due to his acrobatics and speed. So Sonic passively moving so fast he can just send enemies airborne while still fighting them feels very "Sonic" as opposed to just homing attacking into shit and do some shitty punches and kicks to make the homing attack look less repetitive.

The animations look okay to fucking awful depending on the animation, those punches and kicks look stiff and seem to only exist to just communicate that Sonic is attacking as opposed to having any sort of impact to them so you enjoy hitting something as Sonic. I think Sonic Battle on the GBA had more fluid animations then this, and that was a sprite game likely produced on a video game budget comparable to a fast food combo meal when put beside the main line games at the time.

As for 3D Sonic, I think it would be pretty neat if they actually finished Sonic X-Treme, see if they can take that gameplay concept and turn it into something fun.
People have tried, and are trying:
Since nobody posted it yet, here's the combat preview for Sonic Frontiers:
>attacks are just variations on the homing attack
>no classic robot enemies
>guy playing this keeps losing rings

fucking end me.

sonic's always had trouble with combat, and the genre isn't very conducive to it to begin with. Combat requires timing to be satisfying and that's only ever gonna be perceived as a slog in something like sonic. Ironically the guns in shadow were probably the best combat the series has seen just because it was simply and machine gunning a boss' health bar was pretty fun, but I don't think it's the ideal solution. Rather, enemies should only exist in sonic to open up alternate paths or to catch you off guard. You really shouldn't even 'fight' them. There's thatr giant monster near the end of the gameplay and that could be cool since it'd be more like a living level, something I'm only realizing now is done in Solar Ash to pretty solid results.

I think Frontiers can still have potential if it has more of a odyssey format, where you have mini sandboxes with challenges scattered throughout rather than the BOTW gigantic physics box. If that is the format though they really need to show off a new level because this one looks like shit. Odyssey showed off New Donk City, maybe the best level in the game, in huge detail without actually spoiling most of it. This generic stage evokes sonic 06 in the worst way and they should really flush that taste out as soon as they can.

This is why to this very day, everyone takes the piss out of Sonic
Sonic Team for whatever reason feels the need to keep experimenting with this series instead of just sticking with what works
And 90% of the time, it sucks dick
It's doesn't help that it feels like Sonic Team to this very day feels very inexperience with game development
Sega really needs to find better talent at this point

The most insulting thing about it is that they DID - but only for the 2D games. If they contacted the developer for, say, Utopia, and said, "hey, make a new 3D Sonic game for us, Ian will write the script, we'll fund it, just make it happen" , I assure you, we'd get a much better game instead of....whatever Frontiers is. Speaking of which -

The good modern Sonic game coming out (again) is Project 06. Well, more like Sonic '2X, but you know.

Sonic Origins needs to hurry though. Imo, a remaster of Sonic Chronicles would be decent. SEGA's already deep in the circles of Hell. What more do they have to lose?

I wonder if Sega has just lost the heart for making Sonic games and just makes them because it's EZ money.
Everything Sonic Team has pumped out has been pretty souless and crap. Team Sonic racing is the only time I can think of where it seemed to actually enjoy itself and put care into the characters, of a spinoff racing game of all things. It really looks like they either don't want to or are too scared to do mainline Sonic games anymore.

Sonic is successful with kids and kids like party games, if they took Sonic in the route of say, Mario Party/sports/racing games like Nintendo does with Mario, sure it's copying Nintendo like they always do, but at least it's something they're good at. Hell, they should make another fighting game with the roster of characters they have. They can make games with more attitude than Nintendo and it would draw an audience, possibly an even bigger one than they have now.
Maybe taking a break from trying to write stories would help, focus mainly on party style games and get the team into shape and get some direction so there can be games with heart and effort like there used to be.
That way Sega still profits and Sonic is still around in the gaming sphere while they fix up what they want the Sonic franchise to accomplish.

Why do you think they only churn out Sonic, Persona, and Yakuza games? Or for the retro equivalent, Mega Drive/Genesis collections? Cuz those are the only things that make them money.

No. Then we would get "SONIC IS AROMANTIC UWU" but real.

WHERE'S MY MISCHIEF MAKERS REMAKE, GODDAMN IT?!

I've heard Spark is actually good (2 in particular). Might give it a shot one of these days
I tried Spark the Electric Moron 2.

It wasn't the most terrible game but let me be clear: the game has some issues. Among which is the fact that the level design starts being very bad later on, leading to me having to swap between playing with the controller [as intended] and playing with keyboard and mouse [as NOT intended] during sections, because it was impossible to climb up extremely long buildings or race through escape sequences when the controller controls just didn't work out [and I haven't figured out how to fix that yet] and the keyboard could only do so much for some levels while failing at others.

I mean, it plays decently fine, but I think even Sonic 06 would control better most of the time.

I saw the video and fuck does this game look fun, it takes a whole ass minute just to kill a single robot. This literally triggers my Sonic 06 PTSD. reminds me of the healthbar from Sonic 06 in mostly Shadow's campaign.
