A law that basically allows guns to be seized if someone is declared a danger to themselves or others, regardless if they've done anything yet or not. Might prevent violence but is also a pretty gross violation of due process, and the laws proposed often allow the process to occur based on mere allegations from randos

Then there is a court process to try and get the flag lifted. The problem is it can be easily abused, and it infringes on your right to due process, you are found guilty and have to prove yourself innocent to get to use your constitutional right.

edit: I should have been more clear but this is how I have seen politicians and media wanting a federal red flag law to work, each state as it is now has their own version and their own process.

The only red flag case I've ever seen in process, some ex-army guy's girlfriend thought that he was getting Too Mad at politics and had the police come and seize his weapons. They decided that he hadn't done anything illegal and found no plans or statements which were actionable. However, there was nothing in the law about when or if his firearms would be returned to him, so they just kept his property and he had to sue the police to get them back.

Basically what happens is someone doesn't like you so they report you have bad thoughts, there is an ex parte hearing with a judge, and if there is a preponderance of evidence--remember you are not represented at this hearing and cannot present your own evidence or refute the evidence against you--the judge issues an order to take away your firearms. Law enforcement shows up at your house, unannounced, and take away all your guns. Then you can hire a lawyer and try to get them back.
