Sonic Team have long since lost their ability to make good Sonic games.

So why in the name of fuck haven't Sega just handed the rights to Christian Whitehead, Stealth and the others to make games for them?

Mania was incredibly popular, whereas Forces didn't fair too well.

And now there's this. The concept of an open world Sonic game is interesting, but this looks poorly executed.

Just give the damn franchise over to the fan studio to run and let them make the money for you Sega, because you clearly can't seem to do it by your own hands.

Or just go back to making 2D games for an while.

Well if the 2D stages are anything to go by in Forces, I think they'd leave a lot to be desired, they would absolutely have to make a game more in the spirit of Mania, because that old formula hasn't ever let them down (even though Sonic CD was kinda a hot mess, it got better later with re-releases).

Sonic 4 Episode 2 was the last proper attempt at a 2D classic style game (Dimps and Sonic team worked on that game together), and whilst I personally enjoyed the game a lot when it released, there are many reasons why people don't look back at that game fondly (Too many loop de loops, speed panels, no new elemental shields etc.) and say "Yeah I want Sonic Team to make Sonic 4 Episode 3!, Episode 1 and 2 were such great games!".

Some people can't hold their excitement for 3 strands of hair or for them to take wing.
I personally go wild for chicks who can play around in the Himalayas for hours, or are the size of an average human mother. To chime in on the "Sega cannot make Sonic games" discussion, can Sega work on some of their older IPs? Stuff like Panzer Dragoon, Jet Set Radio, and Skies of Arcadia are just collecting dust in a corner. I know Virtua Fighter has gotten a little love as of late, but just do something aside from Sonic.

Technically, they could. It's just all they're focusing on is Sonic because it's usually an safe investment. And it's not exclusive to Sega, since Nintendo has dropped Metroid (for an few years) and F-Zero
At least Cpt. Falcon is the epitome of hype in Smash Bros as consolation. Sega does literally nothing with those older characters/IPs.

My man, let's not forget poor Vectorman. That's one series I'd love to see make a triumphant return.

Also wouldn't mind a new Decap Attack or Dynamite Heady.

Maybe make it like the recent Donkey Kong Country games (2.5D style), and bundle 1 + 2 together like the Crash and Spyro remakes. Boom! Instant-seller! Come on, SEGA! Make Vectorman Rockin' Again!

The new Sonic game has Sonic fans angrier than usual. It's incensed them so bad that the guy who made Sonic Utopia and kicked off all the "Sega Hire This Man" era of good open world sonic fan games, TheGreatLange, had a 91+ tweet meltdown full of image macros and edited video clip comparisons breaking down exactly how and why he hates modern Sonic games.

This is a master's thesis given over the course of over 91 280 character tweets. About Sonic the fucking Hedgehog.

The internet is something special, isn't it?

At least he confirmed he and his team were going to work even harder on Utopia and finish it to really stick it to Sega.

Confirmed early build, I fucking knew it.

Mentions of a skill tree, EXP drop from enemies and so forth. And the AI voice is not Amy, which is something a lot of pro shipfags have been hammering on about for a while just because her VA baited them a few times. They were already pretty retarded about it, but confirmation is always nice. Gameplay from those little snippets did look visually better to a degree, so that's nice to see.

Overall fairly happy with the two vids. Kinda stupid they didn't use this opportunity more to show off stuff to really build hype and goodwill, but eh. Peanuts compared to the early build confirmation.
You're referring to Cindy Robinson? What is interesting about her is she actually has incredibly good vocal range. Listen to her Amy. Then listen to Astrid from Skyrim. Libra and Hinoka from Fire Emblem count too.

She was bating?

Damn, why didn't they even talk about Gamma being in Speed Battle on Sonic Central?

I decided to give this a read this because it caught my attention early enough, this screencap was probably the funniest part in this whole rant thus far that is worth reading by itself, as I know most people aren't going to read this twitter thesis.

Ford can't make a spark plug.PNG

My favorite part was "This is Ford struggling to make a spark plug" to explain SEGA/Sonic Team's incompetence.
:story:

At the start of the gameplay trailer, Sonic just wanders around the world, which took people off-guard. I think they were wandering around to prove that you can now control Sonic in a 3D level.

In Forces, if you pushed the control stick forward, Sanic would take a few steps very slowly, then rocket forward at full speed. (You could push the stick by any amount, it didn’t matter, input was binary on/off.) This made platforming functionally impossible. You could not simply walk forward, then jump to another platform. Instead, you had to jump, homing attack or air dash, then stomp. Long story short, Sonic team has fixed this problem, and now you can actually control Sanic. WOW, AWESOME GAME, GOOD JOB GUYS. You’ve successfully got the controls almost back to on par with Sonic 06.

If this was an early build from 5 years ago, the bare-bones “hey we got the player character to move!” look of this would be fine. It’s not, this is the end product. I think at this point Sonic Team consists of 10 concept artists, 10 musicians, 100 angry Japanese businessmen, and one programmer who shows up once a month and is always drunk. They are consistently outclassed by 1-man developed fan games.

Imagine for a moment you are designing a platformer starring a speedy boi. There are 2 platforms with a gap between them. One platform is up high. HMMM let us consider the options:

  • A ramp that you boost up to launch yourself up high.
  • A curved bit of terrain allowing you to run up a wall.
  • A spring.
  • A chain of enemies.
  • Ledges to parkour up.
  • A boost ring you jump into.

Hmm, are we forgetting anything?

Oh, I know, there is one more option:

  • Just have the player mindlessly walk directly forward into a grind rail that transports them there automatically. No fuss, no mess:

LMAO, so if you like anything that came out post SA1 you're not a true sonic fan in his eyes, christ almighty

Dramatic phrasing aside, I think he’s trying to say modern Sonic is so detached from the games and developers that fans originally fell in love with that it can be considered its own series, and puts the franchise in an identity crisis. When someone says “I like Sonic”, what do you think they’re talking about? Only the 90s games, only the new games, both, Adventure only, 2D, 3D? Sonic has changed so much in terms of quality, genre, overall ambition, and developers (this one is the main point he’s trying to emphasize) that I’d say it’s easy to see how someone could adore Sonic 3 but hate Frontiers.

Think of it like Star Wars; someone may consoom all Star Wars media and like everything in the franchise, while someone else may simply think the original trilogy is good cinema (and may even have a soft spot for the prequels) while thinking everything post-Disney goes against the reasons they consider themselves a fan to begin with. This is a contrast to, for example Mario, where you can safely assume that a “Mario fan” at least somewhat likes every mainline game from the original SMB through Bowser’s Fury.

Why do sonic the hedgehog fans seem like those beat up wifes, that still stick with their husbands who still see good in them, because of the good times they had with them?

Everytime a new sonic game is coming, the first voices are "this will be the one. The masterpiece we always wanted." Only to end it in "why is Sonic so bad these days?" And the cycle continues.

Because these voices are rarely the same people, especially these days.

Forces broke a lot of people who are well in their late 20s-30s when it came out and they've just steadily accepted that the Sonic they grew up with is effectively dead now that Mania 2 is nowhere in sight and have been steadily moving on. Sonic has a million contrarian simps, likely most of them zoomers who legit don't know what pre SA1 era Sonic was like and don't even know what S3&K even is, who unironically think 06 is underrated, and who swear Sonic Team does nothing wrong and it is all the fanbase's fault for bitching so much or SEGA fault because corporation. On the other side you have an autistic hatebase who has steadily been accepting that Sonic will not be what it once was ever again and Frontiers is just further and further emphasizing that.

I know someone who was cautiously optimistic about Frontiers as they hoped Forces would be just a fluke, but as soon as they saw the initial preview footage I could practically see their hope die and we just went back and forth on how Sonic is just a dog shit franchise now and Sonic Team is lazy as shit. These people are drowned out by simps, and many former fans who would vocally hate this checked out about 4 years ago after Forces burned them for possibly the last time after the high that was Sonic Mania.

Sega was always a company fucked by politics, they passed on the tech for the N64 from silicon graphics and then on doing the og playstation with sony with a 50/50 cost split all because some jap executive didnt like the other guy's business card, the kind of shit japs do and why so many japanese companies have gone to shit since the 90s

There were attempts at unfucking Sega, mark cerny was at sega and worked on a bunch of projects including sonic 2 but even he couldnt deal with the bullshit from japan's executives. Think that sega jap executives were so shit even bandai's executives couldnt handle their bullshit which is why the merger didnt happen and bandai went with namco instead

At the same time sonic as a brand was always mismanaged, compare what Sega did with how Nintendo did with mario first and then pokemon

I dont even know if we should call this shit sega anymore, its clear its sammy the pachinko maker calling the shots

The point I'm trying to make is that whitehead and the utopia guy might have the talent but itagaki or whatever his name is who is in charge of sonic team has the political connections within the company to dictate who gets to make a sonic game and who doesnt

Back in the 90s the japs executives were pissed off that the yanks were doing better than them and thats why when the yanks brought the deals with sgi and sony both were rejected to keep the yank branch from taking over, basically sabotaging the company

Now the japs that been fucking up sonic games for over 20 years are losing to a bunch of yank amateurs and their 2D games, same shit again

I would normally call that a sperg having a bout of autism but utopia its really good so he might have the tism but he knows what he's doing so if sega had any sense left they would put him in charge of the next 3D sonic game, with a AAA budget to boot

Might be the game that finally brings the franchise back

for about 6 months until the next entry, a little lacking compared to the previous one, is derided as a massive stinker and then it's back to square one
