Opinion 'That's where the good stuff is': LeVar Burton urges people to 'read the books' right-wingers are banning

Veteran Star Trek actor and Reading Rainbow emcee LeVar Burton appeared on ABC's The View this week and condemned the recent spate of book bans that have been championed by Republican activists and politicians throughout the United States.

Last month, for example, the Virginia GOP sued to force Barnes & Noble to cease selling two pieces of literature that it deemed to be inappropriate for minors.

That was after CNN noted in April that "more than a dozen Republican-controlled states have passed laws or approved executive branch policies that restrict how public school teachers can talk about race, gender, and sexual orientation." A similar effort was mounted in Florida in May when the state's Department of Education banned textbooks that mentioned the topics of climate change, vaccines, and race.

Host Joy Behar touched on that point.

"There has been an ongoing push to ban important children's books, especially about race, sexuality, and basically American history. Give us your reaction to that," she said to Burton.

And so he did.

"I'll be absolutely candid and honest. It’s embarrassing that we are banning books in this country, in this culture, in this day and age," Burton said. "We have this aversion in this country to knowing about our past and anything that is unpleasant we don't want to deal with."

Burton was referring to arguments by conservatives that topics such as critical race theory, which is typically taught at the college level, instill self-hatred amongst white students. While there is no evidence to support these claims, they are nonetheless propagated and repeated by right-wing voices.

"This is not going away. Nothing goes away, especially if you ignore it," Burton continued, citing the dark periods in American history.

"So read the books they're banning," he encouraged the audience. "That's where the good stuff is. If they don't want you to read it, there's a reason why."

He should start Reading Rainbow reboot on YouTube where he basically does Reading Rainbow with these important books. I'm sure he of all people has the platform and power needed to share these books with the masses.

Maybe they could even make it a front page highlight for a week so everyone can see what all this kerfuffle is really about.

Newgrounds kind of fucking called it.

As another user pointed out above, I want as many eyes as possible on any book being banned. That way we, the people can see what’s so bad for ourselves.

I have a feeling it’s less “There’s a character named Nigger Jim” and more “This book for pre-teens has tips on proper anal sex and oral sex practices and talks about how it’s good that teacher made Billy suck his femine penis and told Billy he’ll murder his parents if he says anything”

In general, I don't believe in banning books, but I also don't endorse 5 year olds being given copies of Hustler. Let kids be kids for fuck's sake.
Exactly, nobody is saying you can't have your books, you just shouldn't be pushing this shit on kids. This is worse than letting your six year old play GTA games.
Don't forget he also hypocritically supported cancel culture not too long ago. He's all for censorship, but only for books he doesn't like.
Aren't they all.

So here something I find funny. In the "book", Gender Queer the image is so explicit that they cannot show it on broadcast TV and I have not seen a cable news network show an uncensored image.

If such books are so innocent, why not show it on TV?

Public schools are organs of the state. If the state tells them not to put "Everybody Poops on My Dick" in their libraries and keep them off the syllabus, that's not a ban. It's an exercise of the state's authority to manage its own operations. You can always buy or borrow a copy of "Everybody Poops on My Dick" for your kid, your kid just can't get it from his public school.

Parents attempting to read these now banned books at school board meetings have been silenced on the grounds that the work is too indecent to be read aloud... in the company of grown adults. But it's okay to read this shit in kindergarten classes across the USA and the Western World. You can't hear it in an adult gathering, but the kids can if you read it to them. Jesus Christ. PARENTS should read this shit, just so they know what the fuck is going on.

This is a sadly uninformed take by LeVar. And that's quite unfortunate. I hope it's just that at least: uninformed. I assume anyone who knew what was in these books and endorsed it wouldn't suggest parents read them. Don't let me down LeVar...

I used to think LeVar was a cool guy, same way I used to think Snoop Dogg was alright. Used to.

Bu they outed themselves as Dem house niggers who sure like to talk a lot of crap, but ultimately still carry a chain around their necks and call the "correct" people "massa".

And this makes me dread just what kind of sick fucking shit Mister Burton has in his personal computer's hard drive.

Well, Gender Queer is weird, but I've seen worse at Barnes & Noble.

What about A Court of Mist and Fury? Surely that book - which the Virginian GOP wants to ban - is this pinnacle of literature?

Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, is this the good stuff he's talking about?
