More to the point, I sincerely doubt the Chinese would even attempt to occupy any part of the Americas. When you think about it, cartels make the ideal tributary. I didn't say they wouldn't deal with them, just that there's no long term alliance potential. The one nice thing about Mexico is they're exceptionally resistant to any kind of influence and just do their own thing to the point of being more autistically libertarian than libertarians.

Correct, the cartels have massive egos, paranoia, and sperg out when someone tries to challenge their way of life to the point of sieging federal buildings to prove a point. The other thing a lot of people don't get is that cartels are somewhat of a religious fanatic cult with their worship of Santa Muerte. Now add to that the fact the Israel is also probably involved as high profile members such as the Stew Maker claim to be Israeli trained and the prospects of the cartels being subverted is about the same as a company making a profit in India instead of dying out there like Enron has.

Oh, and a lot of what cartels do isn't just fear, they actually have a lot of good will with the tiny towns that are dotted all over Mexico, which is why those town support the shit out of them, because the central government fucks them over. Contrary to popular belief, things like the cartels, mafias, and so forth are more like a government than anything else because government is a type of organized crime that we just accept.

I'll agree that China wouldn't bother building based in the Americas. The logistical problems are too severe to bother with it. Which is why China would hire Cartel mercs to engage the US in deniable attacks. The strengths of the US military, such as air power and naval power, can't be utilized domestically while the Cartels can engage in their strengths as a guerilla force overtasking already overburdened law enforcement. Given current trends on law enforcement, overall US strength will be sapped as law and order breaks down. We're already seeing the US's influence waning in the Americas of all places.

I don't agree that the US would be able to cut ties with Mexico, especially with Dem politicians being significant players. The Dems long-term strategy is Latinos demographically replacing US citizens. Cutting the flow of illegal immigration means the Dems lose the numbers they need to fortify regular elections. Some of them, like Eric Stalwell and Feinstein, outright collude with the Chinese government, so if China and the Cartels were to work together, Dem politicians would gummy up Defense policy with muh racism. They did the same with Covid when Trump wanted travel bans.

Mexico playing coy with the Americas summit indicates that they plan to be ambivalent to the US. That allows them to flirt with other countries. They might not commit to China fully, but even partial bilateral trade agreements weakens the US hold on Mexico.
