Getting you stuck or killing you for smallest mistakes was early Sierra design but the industry abandoned it at some point and if you ended up on a dead save it was usually due to a bug. LucasArts made their point and clicks without such dead ends and even took some jabs at Sierra in Monkey Island for their "misclick and you die" design.

Not sure why he's calling me gay, he invited me to woods at 11PM and he brought a male friend along... Thought we were all on the same page.

I'm surprised that Alex didn't like House of Leaves. My main guess is that he's just too brain dead to be able to grasp any of it but maybe it hit a little too close to home and he got mega spooked by the idea of living houses and descriptions of Johnny disassociating and basically becoming a schizophrenic himself.
