Part of me chose the avatar just to see how people would react. Also because I couldn’t think of what else to use and I didn’t want a letter anymore
Well if you ever get bored of that one, the Ai has these with your name on it

Alright saplings you win.
After multiple pictures of Fauna's VA and all her clips she jumps to spot #3 for me.

She really has grown on me over the last 2 months

Salome's currently the second most subbed, and is roughly 30k subs away from being number 1. Her growth has definitely run out of its initial boost, but she's still doing roughly 10k per day.

Also, Lee Roha is taking a 300-day hiatus after her 3D stream on July 7th.
I see this picture and I see 4 generic-looking dudes and dudettes, and one weirdo. Interesting to see how most character designs in VTubing way back then weren't exactly fantastical or special. That being said, 10k per day is still fucking massive.

Yeah, there was generally less fantasy going on, though you still had some going for a more fantastical look, like Nojaloli.

In general the main way I'd describe early vtuber designs would be "idol." Obviously due to the success of Kizuna Ai, Kaguya Luna, Mirai Akari, etc. JK-gumi (Mito, Kaede, and Deron) actually really stood out back in the day because of their plain designs. I remember being interested in them back in 2018 because "regular high school uniform" wasn't (and really still isn't) all that common for vtubers. So I wouldn't really take those Nijisanji members as representative of general vtuber designs from that era, one can see how Mito in particular stands out because of her normality when compared to most of the cast of Virtual-san Looking (which aired from January to March 2019), for example.

IMO a part of Mito's appeal was that she wasn't some high tech idol or something, she's just your weird class rep who eats clovers and likes UFOs.

Since 2018 we've definitely seen an uptick in fantastical designs and also just more polished complicated designs as more artists come into the industry and as l2d & 3d gets better.

In case you ever wanted to see some 2view Japanese girl experience the entire Halo series, here you go. She's even kind enough to put an absolutely terrible auto-translator at he bottom of the screen for any foreigners. It's the thought that counts though. Be warned, she quite literally never learns how to drive the warthog until midway through Halo 3, she never learns how to duel wield, and she never learns how to use equipment. Also she only plays on easy and spends a lot of time meleeing enemies. I've just finished her Halo 3 video, and I am going to continue with the rest because it's fascinating to see people experience something that is so ubiquitous in one culture, yet completely absent in another.
Prune (another 2view) did a similar thing like a year ago playing through all of them but for some reason all the VODs are gone. I still want to see some Vtuber risk it all and play Cursed Halo on stream, at least I believe they'd be risking it all since I don't know if they added a SFW toggle.

They're not gone, just unlisted. She seems to like to do that and put them on playlists, idk the exact reason why. https://www.youtube.com/c/Prune73/playlists and the Halo playlist in question: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFO4fnDQ_lzPMbfgyLEFgMAdRfsdqKalo

I would like to refute the singing bit.
the dance bit.. well, I can't find anything to refute with her 1M celebration had some dancing. Timestamp 6:25 for the start of concert if the embed doesn't play right

Botan being included in an idol unit is a weird choice since she's one of the few Holo talents that can't sing or dance

Her performance during 3rd fes was all-around one of the better ones that day in my opinion, and not because I found the others lackluster at all. Which is fucking crazy if you listened to her very first Karaoke stream. And her stage presence is a lot more like Suisei than others more Idol-like dancing and moving around. By which I mean Suisei really holds herself more like a traditional singer with some added flair. (Not that Botan doesn't do both, like in the video you mentioned and whenever she does collabs)

And another example of her more idoly dancing, which I agree comes across as a bit forced. But I feel like that's more because her model doesn't fit it.

A few thousand pages ago when I was still lurking there was a post about Propro Production's Koinoya Mai and her flirtations with bilibili. Not talking about her but the first Propro Vtuber Amanohoshi Chiroru will be streaming a new Live 2D model to celebrate her birthday.
Admittedly I watched her genmate Mikuru more (for singing streams and menhera point closer to my preferences - Propro's slogan is along the lines of "menheras can be charming") but will have a look. Would be interesting as well to compare with other Vtubers' L2D. Chiroru I believe is more zatsudan oriented with some minecraft and cooking streams here and there.
