It's a shame that they always manage to never learn from this kind of thing. Like, honesty from strangers can be valuable! If I thought that say, I had an amazing goth makeup look going on, and then a random person asked me if I was cosplaying Uncle Fester, I would consider whether maybe my makeup wasn't that great after all. Not that I'd necessarily change what I was doing (maybe I love wearing terrible goth makeup so much I don't mind looking like Uncle Fester), but I would accept that I was probably not making the impression that I thought I was, as painful as that realization might be.

But these people have developed an unhealthy coping mechanism: they rush back to their online hugboxes and get just enough approval and reassurance from fellow cultists that they manage to submerge their doubts and convince themselves that nothing of consequence happened. They are going through all the pain of a brutal reality check (humiliation, crying in the bathroom) without the part where you learn from it (self-reflection, honesty, decision based on reality).
