With more intervention he might have mastered personal hygiene and some basic cooking skills but he never would have advanced enough to fit into normal social circles, never mind become self sufficient. Except my point is that he's not capable of even modest success because he's not of average intelligence, or even just on the low end of the scale. He's full-blown retarded. Even if he grew up in a less trashy family he wouldn't be that much better. Maybe cleaner and somewhat more active. Maybe not on the internet unsupervised. But the only "success" he'd have is more day programs and maybe a part-time "job" bagging groceries that a working tard program got for him.

The fact that his family don't care about his hygiene is very telling. The mentally retarded can be very stubborn about issues of self-care, and more so if they are also autistic (as autistic people are just stubborn in general). The problem is that they often don't see the benefit in practicing proper hygiene because of their mental deficiencies. Trying to use your mind when you have cognitive deficits is also very taxing, and there's probably a point where you're just tired out and just can't or won't engage with reason on your position anymore. The retarded also get ordered around a lot, because they can't manage themselves, and I'm sure that sometimes they just get sick of it and just decide that they won't budge over something, to assert a little bit of autonomy. I had a friend with Downs' Syndrome once; great guy, but he hardly had any teeth left, so it was really hard to understand him when he talked. Likewise, I knew a friend of my mom's once who had a Downs' Syndrome son, and she loved him to death but he could be incredibly stubborn. Even normal parents can be ground down by a stubborn special needs child, let alone some apathetic depressed white trash alcoholics raising such a child in some small village with inadequate support. So it's very disgusting, but it's also very sad and unfortunate.
