Catholicism is not "traditional" by any means for the United States, we are a very Protestant nation and always have been. If it wasn't for the fucking French there would probably be fewer Catholics in the US than there are Jews (the only reason Canada, Mexico, Kentucky and Louisianna have any Catholics at all is French influence).

As someone who has lived in the Southeast, Midwest, and West Coast my entire life I have never met a single Irish-American. The containing of those people to three or four states at the tip of the northeast is irrelevant to the overall influence of Catholicism in this country. South and Latin Americans are far more responsible for Catholicism at this point than Irish, Hispanics probably outnumber the Irish 5 to 1 or 10 to 1 by now.
