Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

I'll one-up you: the entire Jak trilogy is the most overrated series of PS2 games that exists. It's, as far as I know, once of the first series of truly awful games that nobody at the time noticed was bad due to the graphics.

Jak 1 is the best game in the series, but it's a glorified Banjo-Kazooie clone, and when the best game is a brainless collect-a-thon, you know we're in for a treat.
Jak 2 takes the ending of Jak 1 and just kind of ignores it, pivots to a new story on a non sequitur, and gives you an okay platformer broken up with bad shooting and even worse driving.
Jak 3 decides that apparently Jak 2 didn't do enough to ruin the coherence of the story and setting, throws the whole thing into the garbage again, launches off in a new direction that requires you basically to forget the first two games, and once again has bad shooting, mediocre platforming...and surprisingly decent driving. Really, the driving is pretty fun. The trilogy then ends with cheap sight gag instead of any kind of satisfying payoff.

Also, Daxter isn't funny.
Not sure what you mean by 2 ignoring the first game's ending. By completing the first game, the gang finds something behind a large door which ends the game on a sequel hook which leads directly to the next game revealing that they found parts for a Precursor device that turned out to be a time machine. The third game also takes some story elements from 2 and expands on them.

I will agree though that 3 did drop a lot of story and character moments from 2 and essentially retconned them for no reason. Jak and Keira have been established to have feelings for each other since the first game, but in the third game, for some reason it's Jak and Ashelin having a thing for each other. Meanwhile, Keira gets completely sidelined and barely gets any dialogue. It was not so subtly implied at the end of 2 that Ashelin liked Torn, but that was also completely forgotten for some reason. All of this stuff was brought back for Jak X, but that was a RACING game.

The entire game was clearly rushed too. It was WAY shorter than 2, guns were more unbalanced, (the ricocheting yellow gun upgrade completely broke the game) and Light Jak, while a pretty good idea in theory, trivializes a lot of the game. It all felt like a knee jerk reaction to people complaining about how hard Jak 2 was. (To be fair though, it was pretty bullshit in a lot of places).

I don't know what it is, but pretty much every third game in the big three at the time (Jak, Ratchet and Sly) just seemed to have gotten rushed out and had a relatively unfinished feeling. They were all well received, but every one of them I can't help but feel was a general step back in some ways for each of their respective IP. With Sly 3 being the one I feel fared the best out of all them due to still having a solid story and conclusion.

This probably isn't an unpopular opinion these days but BioWare have basically been making the same game over and over and are complete hacks.
Honestly I've always thought they weren't really all that talented. They get credit for being one of the first big players in the CRPG field but in terms of writing, quest design, characters, and setting, they've never really astounded me the way some people were.

I'd say at their absolute best they produced Dragon Age Origins and the original Mass Effect, but even those have some problems that make them difficult to consider masterpieces.

3) Random crits are good, I dont give a shit if you watched one Uncle Dane video and instantly got a presumption that random crits are bad, they add fun to the monotonous gameplay of TF2, especially when you get one with the demoman using your grenade launcher, sometimes being the only thing that can unlock a deadlock in payload maps. If you want to be frustrated at criticals, go be frustrated at the gay soldier & his troon 'girl'-friend with the kritzkrieg, call them a faggot they'll probably kill themselves or write a 40 tweet thread about how they got abused in vidya games
Reminds me to point out that I think TF2 competitive is so fucking stupid other than old 9v9 highlander which is the closest to the actual game. Competitive fags have absolutely no right to complain about weapons or cry for nerfs. TF2 was designed to be a semi goofy casual shooter with loads of options available to you, some being stronger than others and some being more fun than others. First off, the fact that the comp niggers have the AUDACITY to play 6v6 with only half the classes then say the game isn't balanced is just an insult. They play a gimped version of the game, whine it isn't balanced, and then have actual effects on the game like the GRU/Eviction Notice. Apparently their reason is because it lets heavy get to mid. But riddle me this compfaggots, if the game is made in such a way that heavy can get to mid, why not just play heavy? And if you don't like playing him, maybe you've realized the game wasn't designed to accommodate your shitty hyper specific game variant. The fact that they have to ban half the weapons just to make their dumb ass gamemode playable speaks volumes.

I think starcraft and similar games are at their best in PvE and campaign. The PvP for RTS' has always bored me and I find the campaigns far more interesting. You get a full show of all the mechanics, you get fun upgrades usually campaign specific, you get to fight unique enemies and overpowered AIs, you get to do specific missions with objectives and not just the same thing every time.

I tried playing Far Cry 3 recently... and let me just say, it reminds me exactly of why I never play Ubisoft games: these games feel like a fucking CHORE.

So many fucking mechanics I can't be arsed to care about, so many lazy game design choices and things that I hate in a game, so many mechanics that basically punish you for... uh, doing exactly what the game wants you to do. Perfect punishment for your children if they're mis behaving: force them to play an hour of any Far Cry game.

GTA Online has proven why its formula wouldn't work in an MMO-like environment.

Saints Row had the right idea with its co-op implementation. Allowing the player wreck havoc or do activities together in peace.
If it did like Payday; you can recruit players (based on class) to do heists.

I keep an Excel doc of different information - I guess a sign of my autism bubbling to the surface - and every year one of the lists I make is for upcoming game releases I might be interested in. I suppose the surprising thing is that this list does not get shorter each year, which would be the expectation given the lack of talent and ideas this industry seems to be experiencing as of late.

Instead, the list is probably longer than ever. I suppose my unpopular opinion then, at least in response to the various "gaming is dead" postings on /v/, is that the reports of the medium's death have been greatly exaggerated.

It's true that the corporate / AAA side of things is in a rather sad state - I re-watched a video highlighting Sony's E3 2006 'disaster' conference and thought to myself "fuck, even their worst old conference is more exciting than their last few E3 shows put together". But to fill the void, there is nowadays quite a large cavalcade of smaller interesting projects that I have on my list:

I enjoyed Cuphead and there is extensive DLC (as big as the base game) coming this month.
Stray, aka the cat game, is next month.
The Hot Wheels DLC for Forza Horizon 5 looks more fun than the main game.
Live a Live, a lost jap classic, is getting a Switch remake with a Western release in July.
Check out Midnight Fight Express if you want Sifu x Hotline Miami.
Splatoon 3 this year.
Evil West, a dark horror wild west action game from the makers of Shadow Warrior, has me sold.
Warhammer 40K: Darktide is basically Warhammer Left 4 Dead.
Scorn is coming in time for Halloween and is an atmospheric, HR Giger inspired fever dream.
Signalis looks like an interesting PS1 throwback, unlike previous 'PS1-inspired' turds like Back in 1995.
No More Heroes 3 is being unshackled from Switch and is coming to other consoles later this year.
The Persona series has also finally been freed from PlayStation.
I enjoyed Resident Evil Village and now we are getting its big titty goth milkers in VR, plus story DLC.
The Callisto Protocol is scratching the Dead Space itch (plus a DS remake in Jan 2023).
Wanted: Dead, from the remnants of Tomonobu Itagaki's Valhalla Games studio (now known as Soleil), looks like entertaining mid-market dreck.
We're finally getting a spiritual sequel to Jet Set Radio in Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, complete with a soundtrack by Hideki Naganuma.
Metal Slug Tactics looks aesthetically pristine. I just hope the gameplay lives up to the style.
Bayonetta 3 is coming this year.
Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope is supposedly coming this year. I enjoyed the previous game as an XCOM-lite.
The System Shock Redux remake is the final leg of development (plus an enhanced System Shock 2) and hopefully will arrive soon.
The fucking chibi Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis phone game looks like better nostalgia bait than the actual remake.
Other shit i'm looking out for is Atomic Heart, Somerville and The Witcher 3 complete edition with RTX visuals.

That seems like a pretty solid list to me and only covers the next 6 months. Next year looks even more packed, as covid is still delaying so many projects. I get the feeling that perhaps people need to broaden their horizons, as worthwhile games do still exist.
I keep my own list of autism, I had to cross off the rest of 2022 though because there are too many good things from last year I haven't gotten around to. Whining about how games were only good from 1999-2005 while still following every bit of minutia about the gaymen industry just to have something to complain about is the most tiresome shit imaginable. Some people need take a damn prozac and try enjoying something for a change.

According to a few, sports games won't sell without their respective licenses. If true, I find it ridiculous. If you like the sport and the game is enjoyable (at least), what would the license do?
People want to play games with players they know. That's about it.

Blitz owned though. Best strategy was to shatter every QB in your conference until they're walking around like a one-legged Dan Marino.

I think Heavy Rain was a really interesting concept and would like to see that style done with a writer who isn't mentally retarded (so, not David Cage) and voice actors who can actually voice-act. The scene where the cops show up and you have to quickly remember what you touched in the room to wipe your fingerprints off was legitimately intense.

Tbf blood dragon and far cry 2 is amazing ( though thats because blood dragon is vastly different and 2 open world is different than all the later entries

Dragon's Dogma just isn't very good. It's neat at first, but eventually, the horrendous RNG grind to get good gear and the smallness of the world overcome its charms and make it a drudge.

Baldur's Gate 2 is genuinely an incredible game and I think their recent shit has been so bad and every two bit company has copied their quirky companion shtick that people look back at it and have that impulse to say "actually, BioWare was never good" when they absolutely were. KOTOR and Jade Empire were also really good games even if they haven't aged well.

Disagree on Jade Empire. That game was fucking stupid. And I guess I wasn't the only one thinking that, it was the dream game of the sinophile doctors that founded BioWare and they never got to do a sequel because people seemingly did not want it.

It was the first time I felt that they fucked up.

Speaking of Jade Empire, I love how the version I have (the special edition) misspelled the name on the box.

In fact it's in a glass cabinet next to me and I'm looking at it as I type this. It literally says "Jade Emipre™: Special Edition".

Tard-mode on.

I hope someone got fired for that fuck of a blunder
