That is indeed a horrible situation, although they could likely either find an abortion in another state, or give the child up for adoption. Also it's thankfully a pretty rare phenomenon. Turns out trauma isn't very conducive to conception.

I think there's a fear among pro-lifers that if rape is permitted as an exception then many false claims will be made simply to get around the restrictions.

I personally have no strong opinion on abortion one way or the other, I can see both sides to it. I'm fine with Roe v Wade being repealed and letting the states decide. Why not right? The federal government is supposed to be for enforcing the constitution and there's nothing in the constitution about the right to an abortion.

Except the arguments about rape are disingenuous, and they always have been. Ask any pro-choicer if they would be ok with a ban with an exception for rape and incest, severe birth defects, and the life of the mother, and they will always fucking say NO! They don't want any restrictions at all, so the rape and incest shit is just a distraction. Before this, had you asked any pro lifer if they would be ok with such a compromise, and 99% of the time, the answer would be yes.

Anyone else tired of the comparisons to Handmaid's Tale?

They use it like it's some huge pop culture phenomena like 1984 and something everyone knows about and everyone is afraid of. It's in fact a silly book and show that only a handful proportionately know about. When I first saw these dresses back in 2016, I thought it was some conservative political organization counter-protesting the left.

Meanwhile, their politician-aligned party is trying to enact portions of 1984 and when people are alarmed these types dismiss it as something to worry about.

It is equal almost to someone dressing up as a character from Legend of the Galactic Heroes at a protest and expecting everyone to know/care about the politics of the anime. It's such a ridiculous LARP with a lack of awareness you only ever find in the left with their "This is just like Harry Potter!" politics.
