After watching the two part documentary on Saville, I have to wonder if his success was just a by-product of the time? I just can't believe he attained any manner of fame, surely not on the scale that he did. Maybe I missed something but I just can't grasp how a nation lauded him the way they did.

Dick Clark's probably the closest to Saville in 'method of attaining fame and the level of that fame' that the US has. It's kind of a boomer thing where the guy who played the records was a big deal in pop culture. In the UK, also most of the time everyone was listening to the one radio station that played pop, and was broadcast nationwide. You had DJs get big over here (Clark, Wolfman Jack, etc) but it was regionally fragmented, whereas in the UK they had massive media presence. They were the media, on radio. Well, them and some pirates who were just as busy being edgelords, shooting at each other and getting raided by the cops as they were spinnin' discs.

His success has always been down to him intimidating people on the club scene (throwing his weight around as a tough man) + being bolstered by the BBC then the royal family. Rich pricks are the culprits of his influence, maybe they liked his humour because they saw it as an extension of commonality with the plebs or saw boosting saville as a mutually beneficial opportunity. Most regular people didn’t like him or were more interested in organically influenicial comedians (yes there is a difference). I know that people in slum areas knew about Saville’s dark secret just as much as the royal family did.
Tldr: the nation didn’t laude him, the oblivious idiots who consume televised fluff bought into what saville was presented as (most of which were ToTP). The majority of common people either knew what he was like in early days or simply didn’t care for him. Sure he did charity work, so did Anthea turner and every other person on tv - big woop.
I’ve heard of this problem being more prominent. It doesn’t fit here though because both parents are deadbeat with criminal records as long as my arm. Any reasonable judge wouldn’t trust these ghetto ratchet people with a goldfish let alone 3 kids. Hardly the Kramer vs Kramer scenario.

Apples to oranges perhaps, but in the States, people like Jay Leno or Jimmy Fallon have to really DUMB down their acts to retard levels in order to keep their jobs at the Tonight Show. Those who fail to dumb down enough (O'Brien) get sacked from the show in a matter of months...

The problem with guys like Ezra is that they are wealthy and connected enough to get away from prosecution with much better ease. Besides, he isn't that deep in shit with the Law, as far as I understand he's only really wanted in the Tribal jurisdiction and isn't being chased by the feds or even state police. My bet is on him laying low until they give up and drop the case against him, he isn't desperate enough to go for a murder-suicide or even just a suicide (considering he is a colossal narcissist), and it's not like he's really deep in shit until bigger charges show up. Either way, this guy has enough money to own a whole farm and probably some other assets, he'll be fine as long as he stops being such an asshole!

honestly don't know much to have an opinion but from a business perspective he's amazing, who would have imagined building the fucking discovery channel into a megacorp and buying fucking warnerbros. i really can't think of a better accomplishment than that, buying out a major studio from a cable reality channel. usually its some big tech company that overshadows the original competition but this is pure hard work and making the right moves.
Plus Warnerbros has been fucked since Kevin Tsujihara came onboard, the only good exec in the industry the last decade has been Kevin Faige. at the very least David will provide the kick in the pants necessary to thrive in the modern era. the fact that he's fucked over JJAbrams means he clearly doesn't give too much of a shit about tribal bullshit. the people i know that have met him didn't have anything bad to say about him, but that was years ago when he was just "The Mythbusters' boss" as far as any of us were concerned.

Kind of seems less like they want to murder him and stalk him for what he did and more so just because he's a celebrity? I get hating someone for being a psychotic criminal douchebag but people who want to harm others just for being a celebrity/rich are practically human insects.

That shit horrified me. I never heard of him until that Yewtree thing. And that Rolf Harris I know because of Kate Bush. Thankfully she replaced his vocals on one of her album remasters. Unfortunately she can't replace him on one of them because he played an instrument.

i wouldn't say Ezra is too wealthy, stars are always paid dogshit for their first superhero film, i doubt being the faggy best friend in indie films paid him well considering how low budget they were. the only place he'd get paid would be those HP films and those got canned halfway through, million dollar paydays for films have been gone for awhile now too outside of franchise films and even then thats only for the starring role, supporting gets told to get fucked, the rest of the cast combined gets paid what is usually given out to the star. i would be legitimately surprised if he is anywhere close to a millionaire, 4 very minor roles in blockbuster films plus 25% in fees to agents, managers, pr, union; plus taxes. i would be amazed if he has even made one million dollars combined in his lifetime pre-flash movie.
honestly thats probably why he's so crazy now, flash finished filming and he got paid $6 million and now can't wait to spend it partying. its literally like giving yaniv $6m.
