It may have been posted previously (this thread is moving at a lightning pace), but I have a thought experiment for angry pro-choice posters ITT:

Chuck Schumer (the current Senate Majority Leader) had the votes to codify Roe vs. Wade after this opinion leaked. Manchin, Murkowski, and Collins were all willing to vote aye on a bill that:
-Banned any restrictions on abortion during the first trimester
-Demanded "reasonable regulation" on any abortion access during the second trimester
-Required exceptions be made for the life and health of the mother during the third trimester.

Democrats could've saved Roe. It would have passed 52-48. Instead they voted on a bill that
-Legalized abortion access through all three trimesters
-Permitted sex-selective abortions
-And refused any religious exemption for doctors unwilling to perform the procedure.
And they lost 49-51.

They did so because they knew this would happen, because they want you upset at the Supreme Court and not them, because they had 50 years to fix this issue and preferred to dangle it like a shiny set of keys over your collective heads in a cynical means to get your vote.
And because you're more likely now to foolishly approve of them doing whatever naked power grabs against the Supreme Court that are likely forthcoming.

Asking because autism, are both versions of the bill available as pdfs somewhere? And do drafts that don't get voted on still get searchable names/numbers?

I have an idea! Since you Americans like democracy so much why don't you have a referendum about the abortion part as well as many other questions? IIRC Switzerland is one country where any major law changes require a referendum with a majority vote. Or is that communism, socialism or whatever the current scare word Trumptards came use?

It's a bit amazing how little foreigners understand about what's happened with Roe. The reason Democrats are in such a panic right now is they don't want to have to vote on abortion or to have anyone vote on abortion.

Part of the problem is Democrats have argued there should be zero limits on abortion. California for instance seems to say you should be able to have abortions up to 6 months in. Switzerland on the other hand only allows for abortion up to 12 weeks in, more conservative than Florida and its 15 week limit. Switzerland effectively is more conservative regarding abortion than many conservatives in the US.

Non-Americans should try to realize that many of their own countries have been vastly more conservative about abortion than the US has been.

I got the summation of what Roe vs. Wade entailed from its wikipedia page, tbh, and trying to find the raw text of the decision now via search engines is a massive headache, as every potential source is blathering on about Dobbs.

Look up homosexuality laws on Wikipedia. Most of the nations I mentioned already even have same sex unions illegal. No one has outright banned homosexuality, but have made laws to restrict homosexuality in media and in public spaces

I don't agree on the zero limit part, unless the mother's life is in danger. Actually, fuck it, I'd really like to hear what scientists think about it. I'll rather listen to scientists who know better about the topic than politicians on the left AND right.
