Their cabinet with the binoculars was locked and the key was mistakenly taken by the former captain who was replaced at the last minute. So, the lookouts were using their unaided eyesight to spot the 'bergs. Had they had binoculars, the Titanic most likely would not have hit the 'berg, or so one of the surviving spotters thought.

The problem with that logic is, it implies that if you didn't use a gun to kill, then you didn't use it or didn't use it correctly. For example, if someone is coming at me with a knife, so I draw a handgun and cause them to drop it , I've used the gun successfully (scenarios like this make up a vast majority of "Defensive Gun Uses".) If I shoot him, but my shot doesn't stop him quickly and he stabs me and I die, I've used the gun unsuccessfully, even if my shot turns out to be fatal and my attacker dies. So a successful DGU can involve no killing (as is the case most of the time), and an unsuccessful DGU can involve killing.
