There's two possibilities. The latter is a maladaptive coping mechanism for people with a history of trauma, especially childhood sexual abuse, as a way to dissociate from your trauma. When being yourself is untenable, the obvious solution is to be not-you, even if it means killing off the old you.

The former is why people join cults in the first place. They need a sense of identity after losing theirs, or they need a support network. Unfortunately, that means you have to hand over your sense of self and you judgment over to the cult.
