The argument they usually use is "misgendering a criminal shows everyone that your belief in a trans person's 'true gender' is contingent on whether you personally respect them."

Which, of course, is true: next to nobody actually believes that trans people are the "gender" they say they are, they're just being nice or respectful or non-confrontational.
