Yakuza is pretty accurate. Phil may know nothing about idol culture, but I do.

At least in Jpop, you can begin as early as middle school and then graduate out of the program as you get older and keep going or not; usually it doesn't interfere with studies. All 3 (now 2) Babymetal members started off as middle school idols and kept it going. And yes, the training is that grueling. However, they tend to be supported well if they're with a good company. Plenty of idol companies are black companies with shady dealings.

Hell, even virtual idols like hololive go through a several month training process to get them acclimated to their genmates and the livestreaming format.
