North Korea finally did something lol
This actually could have been the norks. I doubt it was but it could be and if it was them that would be pretty funny.
I think it is more common in Japan for guns to either be legitimately stolen from police/defense force or conviently "go missing" from those organizations from time to time.

Even with insane levels of regulation, a country's cops and military will always have guns which means there will always be a pipeline through which those guns end up in the hands of criminals. Just becomes more expensive and difficult to traffick the arms, but it always happens to some extent.

Also despite citizens not really being able to own guns in Japan, there is still Howa and a think a few other companies in Japan that make guns for export. So something might just disappear from a gun factory once in a while with some of the live rounds that are used to test fire the guns for the initial function check and accuracy assessment.

This is just speculation of course but aside from shit being smuggled in from China perhaps I can't really see how else guns end up in crime in Japan.

I just know logic dictates if there is a dearth of something like firearms, people will try to get them from the same government that outlawed them in the first place. If the government and cops hold nearly all the supply, criminals at least know where the guns are...so some wads of cash or some good social engineering will still result in getting a gun as long as a weak link human can be exploited. And money certainly talks.
Making a gun is trivially easy especially if you only need to fire one round, which is all an assassin needs to do.

Edit: He fired two rounds but with a homemade double barrel.

a politician died on the first episode

they take this really seriously for example when kyoani was burned to the ground one anime in particular stopped being broadcasted for a while because its main theme was "fire "
Lycorice Recoil, someone just told me about this anime last night. Yeah, it's either postponed or cancelled now that Abe is announced dead, especially since the story is about secret agents killing people to prevent crime. It's gotta be suck to whoever watched this thing

The second shot was a kill shot.

Holy shit, dude.
This is probably a gay comparison, but this could genuinely become Japan’s 9/11 moment, in the sense that, like, this is going to change a LOT about how security is handled- Japan is typically a high-trust society, but I could see this really changing things.

I don’t know what to think, really- this is insane. Abe was one of the most interesting politicians to me, he seemed to be one of the few that actually cared about his people, and not the globohomo sphere.

Maybe rate me late but OP doesn't have this high quality video of the two shots, clearly audible (camera shakes during it); source WSJ; NHK seemed to have filmed it originally live:

Also these two short footages that show the shooting unobscured:
NHK World:

Amateur footage up close:

Another one (amateur footage?):

Based Abe spent years dabbing on a country full of incels by telling them to just have sex, so I'm honestly surprised some virgin with rage didn't shoot him sooner.
He was in charge long enough to do something about it. A state mandated gf program was clearly the answer, yet another politician unwilling to grasp the nettle.

Higher res image of the gun, with a very weird photobomb from bike dude

Def. has electronics on the underside, most likely the firing mechanism
Battery powered is more reliable than slam fire junk people tend to make. Smart, reliable, efficient.

Kinda wish electrical firing mechanisms took off over here in the states but of course boomer mindset ruined it(Totally unrealistic SHTF scenario that would make owning a gun a liability anyway since everyone but like 3 Dale Gribbles have the knowledge to make modern cartridges from raw material) just like solid copper bullet's when that shit started popping up to appease California law regarding lead. We had something great that was better than what the military had but the hunting community chimed in and now were stuck with complete dogshit(Ironic California law actually leading to something better being made)

Whoever made the feature I'm going to uh akshually you and ask what makes you think that this home depot/radioshack boomstick was rifled.
Anyways I'm not sure what this was supposed to accomplish except symbolically because as far as I knew Abe was basically at the end of his political run anyways.
