Lightyear director Angus MacLane decided to go after critics of his film after it got embarrassed at the box office by Minions: The Rise of Gru.

Lightyear opened at the box office to a dismal $50.5 million according to The-Numbers and never found it legs as it saw a 64% drop in its second weekend only bringing in $18.1 million. By its third weekend it dropped another 64% to only bring in $6.4 million.

The film has currently only grossed $107.7 million at the domestic box office and $81.9 million at the international box office for a combined worldwide box office of $189.6 million.

In contrast, Minions: The Rise of Gru matched Lightyear’s entire domestic run in its opening weekend bringing in $107 million.

The film’s total domestic gross currently sits at $140.6 million and its international gross is at $93.7 million. Combined the film has a worldwide gross of $234.3 million.

MacLane would lash out at critics of Lightyear and especially those comparing Lightyear to Minions: Rise of Gru retweeting Lon Harris who claimed people who are comparing the two films are “poisoned.”

Harris wrote, “Gonna get 100% serious for a moment. If you are reading this, and you think LIGHTYEAR vs. MINIONS represents a real political or social debate, such that you can read deeper meaning into their box office totals, log off the internet immediately. You have been poisoned.”

Not only did MacLane use Harris as a proxy to attack critics, but he described people who were giving Lightyear low reviews on IMDb as trolls.

MacLane responded to a user inquiring why reviews were so low on IMDb tweeting, “Short answer: much like the second chapter of THE HOBBIT, it mainly has to do with trolls.”

The film has a weighted average of 5.3 out of 10 on IMDb from 42,041 users albeit over 40% of the reviews are 1 star reviews. The arithmetic mean for the film is 4.6 and the median is 5.

Interestingly, the poor reviews are across demographics as the the film only received average scores over 6 from females between the ages of 18 and 44.

The review score on IMDb is not that much lower than aggregate scores found on other review websites. on Rotten Tomatoes, the film’s verified audience score sits at 85% with an average rating of 4.2 out of 5.

However, the All Audience score sits at 67% with an average rating of 3.5 out of 5. A score that is marginally higher than the Top Critics Tomatometer score which sits at 62%.

On Letterboxd, the film has a paltry 3.2 rating out of 5 stars from 49 fans.

Aside from attacking critics, MacLane would also try to rebuff criticism regarding Disney’s stated policy of grooming young children through their content that they most assuredly attempted to do in Lightyear.

He tweeted, “Why do you have to insert politics into science fiction.”

This man has worked for Pixar as an animator since A Bugs' Life. You'd think he'd know the ins and outs of the Toy Story franchise by heart, and yet he still ripped it out and fucked it up. This is also his first directing role (he co-directed Finding Dory and directed a few shorts), and he's quickly revealed himself to be a massive soybitch crying about it.

Get fucked, faggot.

Dismal 50.5 Million Dollars?

The fuck am I supposed to react to this? By being angry that the director isn't celebrating his decadence and instead is crying to the bank?

I don't know what the budget or the big deal is, but if I'm supposed to be "morally outraged the movie with gay space marine fudgepacking isn't up top", fuck you, I get to feel how I feel, you fucking heartstring and brainstem yanking rats. There are more broken previously aspiring comic artists and animators who had to give up their dreams because they have to support themselves over making a living being an artist in this fucky world ruled by the affluent and bloated. Fuck off and wipe your tears with your dollar bills, you crocodile teared fucks.

It's dismal becuase it cost them $250 million to make it.

It's a massive loss to a studio that's never seen one of its movies tank.

Fuck even Cars 3 made money. Lightyear is looking to be a massive flop for Pixar.

No wonder he's crying. Chances are he's done in Hollywood and he knows it.

crackpot theory: Lightyear rips off despicable me/minions because future buzz's minion robots are yellow cyclops guys a lot shorter than his power armor and say "zurg" when trying to say "buzz" much like how minions have the quirky broken english. Both also have the logo on their chest and 3 fingers.

Well, he deserves to be crying. How lame you have to be to make a movie for kids about an astronaut and make it boring?

The plot wasn't complex enough to hold an adult audience and the time travel plot was too complicated for kids to know what the fuck was going on.
The plot, for what I've read, it was too similar to Interstellar, which was already boring and overrated. It has a little of Lost in Space movie, which wasn't a hit either.

I still don't understand what the existence of the movie means. Our Buzz Lightyear is a toy based on a cartoon. The cartoon wasn't based on a real life story. Why is this movie about a real life Buzz Lightyear?
I don't know much about the lore of the franchise, but I think it's never really stated whether Buzz is real or not. As far as we know, he could have been a real astronaut who inspired a cartoon and Andy was a fan of it. What I remember is that Buzz is immensely popular among kids and the toy was THE toy kids wanted during that year. Not one single thing about this movie indicates boys would be crazy about the character.

Funny how that director thinks you shouldn't compare a kids movie to another kids movie. Just another Hollytard getting high smelling his own farts.
Funny how these dudes are obsessed with kid's films that are shit. I remember Disney of Yore, animated films were always Oscar worthy, family friendly, and lacked obvious propaganda. There were multiple teams just to get the color schemes just right and other teams to mimic light tracing. Today, Disney dispenses teams to imagine what type of pubes lesbians have.

For pete's sake, you were making a high budget direct-to-video spinoff; you were not making an auteur film challenging the best of Lynch or Cronenberg.
Also, being buttsore about people questioning your movie's politics showcases just how much of a higher priority politics had over a good story or cinematic direction.

Pound sand, nig.

Both films are like the fifth movies in their respective franchises, one just knew to stick to the formula and give people exactly what they wanted. TS4 was equally inconsistent with the rest of the Toy Story films, so this is of a piece, except worse because there's not even recognizable voice talent to hook people.

Also is this idiot acting like people liked the Hobbit movies and the only reason they got bad reviews is because of those DANG DIRTY TROLLS? Peter Jackson didn't even like making them.
There are many reasons why the movie flopped, but you show your ignorance here.

He is referring to the book where Bilbo and friends are captured by Trolls in the second chapter.
You know, TheHobbit was a book, like written words on pages of paper, before it became a movie.
