He probably is. Objectivity is Mauler's trademark. But what the guy in the screencap said is retarded, I don't recall the Last Jedi too much but the scenes were two sides of the story by Kylo and Luke, it's supposed to show different perspectives with Kylo's being more vicious and menacing because that's how he remembered. It's a "revelation" thing, they showed two pieces of information for the story and then revealed what actually happened later. It's not "demonstrably bad filmmaking," fucking Reservoir Dogs did the same thing. A lot of films that show two sides of a story do that. TLJ sucks but you don't have to invent excuses for why it does.

While objectivity is definitely the creed of Mauler/the Efap crew, they're definitely not the only ones to use or even popularize it. And Jay is known for watching/following some more obscure/niche content so he could have gotten it from somewhere else. Heck, I bet it comes up in their comment section from time to time. But I admit, it is a possibility it was a jab at Efap. I know they've made a few jokes about people who obsessively make rant videos, but I don't think they'd have the patience to sit through something as long as Efap. I could definitely see a world though where fans sent links of Efap reviews though.

As for the complaint, yeah, that's a pretty bad/dumb take. And it's not like there's a shortage of valid criticisms about TLJ. I mean, really, if you wanted to go with the "contradicting" argument, just point out the fact that Rian and Abrams clearly had differing ideas on certain characters/where to take the plot. Two characters having differing points of view of how an event happened is by no means an example of bad writing. Hell, I can't even say it's some weird artsy take on flashbacks, it's so standard that sitcoms frequently parody it.

It feels like he just want to be contrarian for the sake of being contrarian. Half of the games he put on the list are very popular, and says he doesn't understand why they're so popular. He also brings so much reasons to dislike those games that are meta (like queues in OW), but does that really make them bad ? Bugs impair your experience while you're actively playing, so does poor design, but those other reasons don't really matter in the grand scale of things.

Aside from that, I won't judge him on what he puts on his list, I wouldn't be able to make such a top, I would probably do it with game genres more than actual titles.

I love how he puts danganronpa on there as an "Ace Attorney rip off' when like by that logic half of media would be rip offs, is True Detective a rip off of Twin Peaks just because of the premise of a murder mystery with darker undertones

Hard disagree. The problem isn't that these stories deviate from the source material, it's that they're poorly executed. Top Gun: Maverick wasn't immune to being shit by simply doing what the original did.

Take Transformers for example. The franchise was in a dire state due to several failures at replicating the success of Generation 1. Then came Beast Wars, which was so antithetical to G1. A CGI cartoon where the robots turned into animals instead of vehicles and no humans present. And yet, a good chunk of the fanbase consider it better than G1. It was so good in fact, it saved Transformers as it brought new life into the franchise.

Or if you want a more modern example, Transformers Prime took all the elements from Bayformers and actually made them function. Bayformers itself deviating alot from the source material.

I really dislike the notion that for some prequel, sequel, reboot, etc to be good, it has to be slavish to the source material and not make any changes. The TMNT franchise does it all the time, which doesn't make the concept stale. The best Shredder in many fans eyes isn't the human ninja, it's literally an alien criminal in a robot suit.

I wouldn't go that far to say Beast Wars was antithetical to the original transformers. I mean, what exactly do you call Optimus Primal's final transmetal form just to give one example (probably the only example I suppose)? In general though yes, they went from machines to animals. Ok, so what? It's effectively the same formula. The show even did homage to the original series a few times as well.

To be fair, if some random person in a thread said "I liked No Way Home, but the rest of Phase 4 hasn't impressed me to the point I'm dipping out" then I really wouldn't blame them. Granted, I lost interest in the MCU before Infinity War.

I think it's more so the purpose of the podcast. EFAP has always been a reaction podcast about how stupid some people's takes are that talked about media secondarily, and never started up with more than the most bare-bones plan. Drinker's podcast is considerably more focused, often prioritizes guests who have something to say on the matter, and is strictly about the media. It also helps that since they aren't reacting to anything, there's no pausing literally every 10 seconds to respond to a point they think they'll make.

The movies do stand on their own. They're an obviously separate continuity and aren't intended to be proper adaptations. Why? Because comics are infinitely more retarded and no self-respecting person enjoys them.
