War Russia takes delivery of "Doomsday" sub, "Belgorod" - Didn't take long for the cheap Chinese knock-off.

'Doomsday’ Submarine Armed With Nuclear Torpedoes Delivers to Russian Navy

A Russian Navy submarine armed with a strategic nuclear torpedo the size of a school bus was delivered to the Kremlin this week, according to an announcement from the shipyard.

Project 09852 Belgorod is based on a Russian Oscar-class guided-cruise missile submarine that has been altered to accommodate six 80-foot Poseidon nuclear torpedoes that could be armed with a warhead of up to 100 megatons, USNI News previously reported.

The submarine was delivered to the Russian Navy in a ceremony in at the Northern Fleet’s headquarters in Severodvinsk on Friday.
"Poseidon" (also known as "Skif" when in seafloor-launch mode) is a torpedo that can supposedly cruise the oceans or lay dormant on the seabed almost indefinitely.

Belgorod herself is fairly unremarkable, except for the ability to launch "Poseidon", and piggyback a deep-diving midget sub (possibly for tapping undersea cables).

Belgorod may also have the ability to launch torpedoes known as "Kanyon".

From Covert Shores:
"Kanyon" (Status-6) Strategic Weapon
The weapon is designed to strike coastal cities and strategic targets, e.g. New York, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and bases like Groton CT and San Diego. The warhead is reported as a 100 megatons (which is credible) nuclear device with a ‘dirty’ shell (reportedly Cobalt, but likely Uranium) to maximize the radioactive fallout. The payload is similar to the warheads used in ICBMs (Inter-continental Ballistic Missile) but only one is carried on the torpedo. It could therefore be compared to a city being hit by a single MIRV (Multiple Independent Reentry Vehicle) except that it explodes under or on the surface of the water. The effect is likely to be much more localized than an air-burst, but with greater local contamination spread by a radioactive ‘rain’. The explosion itself may be some way out of the target city due to geography and obstacle defenses but a shoreline city like New York would wiped out by a single hit. Performance variables:

Depth: The stated running depth of 1,000m is credible and places it below current countermeasures.

What a waste of money lol

None of these give Russia capabilities that haven't already existed for decades - nuclear torpedoes, tapping undersea cables, indefinite cruising underwater, destroy cities - at much less cost than whatever Russia spent on this

A regular nuclear sub can sail around without surfacing for months, why do you need a nuclear torpedo that can do the same indefinitely? There's no utility the latter gives you that the former doesn't. The regular nuclear sub can hit inland targets too, this nuclear torpedo cannot

A city killing nuclear torpedo? You can already destroy cities with regular sub launched nuclear missiles, the subs can get so close and the missiles fly so low they are impossible to stop. Why do you need a huge nuclear torpedo?

No wonder they couldn't beat Ukraine in two weeks like they should've been able to if this is what they're spending their rubles on

Given the other remarkable feats of Russian military engineering we've seen, it probably pops like a bloated corpse that's been laying the desert sun for three days upon being lightly brushed against by a particularly thick cloud of deep sea plankton.
Russian nuclear subs are actually pretty good, the Soviets knew for decades that they didn't stand a chance on the water's surface so invested heavily in making sure that they could bring nuclear deterrence right to America's doorstep.

Oh, the dilemma of a Kiwi. Can't support Ukraine because it's the current thing and we're too cool to be mainstream. Can't support Russia because hanging out with the violent autist is absolutely uncool. Can't always laugh at both because it will seem like you support the other. Can't laugh at the transgenders because that topic has been beaten to death now.

It is a tough time to be a Kiwi.

I mean it's probably overhyped but you're also being a seething retard.

This is a brand new capability that, publicly, no one has anything on par with. A fast nuclear torpedo with theoretically unlimited range. There's no known countermeasure to it. Plus Russia just having another nuclear sub out there that can do all the usual stuff is an obvious boon for Russia. Would you be saying the same shit if the US popped out an equivalent? Probably not because it's a powerful capability similar to our own nuclear subs prowling the deep with nuclear missiles.
How effective the torpedoes actually are, well hopefully we never find out, but it's yet another "Do you feel lucky punk?" card up Russia's sleeve for now.

The number of Soviet->Russian nuclear sub disasters are many. I cannot wait for the hijinks this white elephant will get up to.
Yeah I feel like it's a matter of time with something this hefty and complicated. America was graced by its father of the nuclear Navy to establish sound doctrine and practices making it pretty retard proof with an arguably impeccable record.
The torpedo design may be sound but the sub maintenance may not be - not that I really know what all goes into it but it wouldn't be their first rodeo.

Russia already has nuclear missile submarines as good or almost as good as what the US has

None of these add new capabilities that are useful

There already is no known countermeasure to subsurface launched nuclear attack. The only way to stop it is know where all the enemy's missile subs are at all times and have them constantly shadowed close enough to take them all out within minutes. Nobody can do that

It's meme weaponry. The nuclear tsunami can demolish a city! Wow how cool and badass. Spending billions to create a weapons system that does what can already be done for cheaper

The main and maybe sole advantage in this is creating technology that lets you operate militarily from much deeper and you could create that without pouring the extra resources into this huge torpedo of limited if any additional strategic or tactical value

Don't mistake Communist-inspired apathy towards work ethics with genuine design skill and engineering prowess.

The Russians have a long history of making reliable and hardy equipment when they want to.
From Sputnik to the AK-47, the T-34 tank to laser eye surgery, Russians can come up with some great stuff.

Why the fuck is this things name so fucking close to the shit mentioned in what I'm pretty sure is from a shitpost comic from over a decade ago now that I've been occasionally seeing resurface in the weirdest fucking places online this past month or so.
Sure it's not the same exact name but because I can't remember what the fuck it was When i see the name my brain jumps to "I see you've taken a liking to belgorod...." with the weirdly drawn smug face.
Someone's probably gonna make a shitpost tied to this with that image and the text just edited to be Belgorod instead of whatever the fuck the original thing was mark my fucking words.

it's kinda cool/menacing they got a nuclear sub but those have existed forever. Nobody wants to USE the nukes in the nuke sub unless they're fucking idiots.
