Lol Paris-Barca is one of the most expensive international train journeys (searched just now for September and the cheapest direct ticket is 99 EUR), and it still doesn’t turn a profit - Renfe wants out of it.

Eurostar tickets can start as low as 39 iirc but you have to get those pretty much the day they go on sale, which can be months in advance. In your average tourist window (1-2mths before departure) you’re probably talking 49-59, possibly more. Also the fact that Eurostar is still in a financially precocious position despite having a monopoly on passenger-only rail through the Channel Tunnel and almost went bankrupt during COVID.

I love rail but the simple truth is it’s fucking expensive to build, maintain and operate. Without significant subsidy you’re only talking a handful of short-ish intercity routes as being profitable. There’s a reason the few private ventures in America are only focusing on short, very specific routes.
