GamerGate was a little different. GG as "Gamers encounter a political issue and become divided" was always going to happen. But more importantly, GamerGate was the first time the left lost a culture war argument in 30+ years. The right had given up the culture to the left sometime in the 70s or 80s. They lost the last culture war to the point that an entire generation of righty politicians and political managers had been conditioned, trained, and indoctrinated to not even begin to have the fight. Just let the left dictate culture and the right can try and slow down any of the more insane excesses. It was just like the abortion debate -- a compromise. Safe, legal, rare for abortion, "left but not too crazy" for culture.

GamerGate at it's core was the left stepping into an industry / hobby / fandom / organization and saying "welp, this is a nice enough setup, but you aren't pandering to our cultural whims enough, so obviously you'll have to fix that." And to their shock, and everlasting eternal burning hatred, were told "No, fuck you." The very intelligent people -- they have pieces of paper telling us (and themselves) this -- declared to us the truth and the proper opinions, and the gamers said "lol, faggot."

And that's where we learned the flipside of the culture war. Where the right had been trained into flinching at the mere flexing of lefty cultural power, the left... had forgotten that you have to be ablet to do more than just flex. The left doesn't know how to fight a culture war anymore. They haven't NEEDED to in decades -- an entire political generation, at least. So when they arrived on the scene to enlighten the masses with the glory of their great cultural ideas and the people in question not only rejected but outright mocked them, they had absolutely no idea what the fuck to do.

Worse, they have no stamina. These are people who crumple into the fetal position if they hear the word nigger. They literally train themselves to break down at the mere mention of this word, because it means they are good people -- while openly calling any uppity black that refuses to obey them coons and uncle toms. Because they're good people. They had to ban the word "groomer" because it was so devastating to their position and they had no answer to it. Gamers just flat out telling them "no, fuck you" was not only an existential problem to them, it was one they don't have the internal fortitude to deal with.

So rather than even have the debate, they have spent the past 9 years ensuring the evil uppity gamers are sequestered away, their ability to speak and discuss things disrupted, with the mere mention of "G*m*rG*t*" being a thought terminating cliche to them. The ultimate boogieman, "the evil that said no to us, the beautiful ones." As far as I can tell, the plan is to just hide the entire existing gamer culture in the cellar while they try and grow a new, woke gamer culture to replace it. The problem being is it's an industry, and industries have to sell things, and no amount of "you aren't allowed to have an opinion unless your opinion agrees with mine" bullshit will ever force those nasty, nasty gamers to buy shitty products by people that hate them just to prove they're good people.

This just made me realize the army might be coalescing around woke SJWs who would be willing to kill their own citizens, but if they were to fight a real enemy, all you would have to do is blast the Village People's Macho Man and replace all the words with "Nigger MAGA Tranny Faggot Groomers."

The enemy wouldn't even have to fire shots, they could just walk by and pick up the rifles while Sgt. It's Ma'am is in a fetal position on the ground in a self induced coma.

I wouldn't be surprised, although one of my sibling's father-in-law's sense of humor runs towards asking Icelanders if the elves are real or saying that they're fans of the rival team in English pubs, so I'm sure there's a bit of truth to the rude Americans at times. Maybe it's just a tit-for-tat thing with Euros.

The Han are the center of the world though, we inferiors should know better.

The best way I summarized Chinese military history to my less historically-inclined friends is "China loses ever war, including those they fight against themselves."

Add to that a complete lack of naval military tradition due to catastrophic disasters like their failed invasion of Japan and I'm not worried about them in the slightest.

You're not wrong. Keep in mind that the Chinese had trouble consistently keeping the Silk Road city-states in the Tarim Basin under their consistent control. We're not talking about military powerhouses either, just smallish Indo-European("Tocharian") or Indo-Iranian(Saka/Sogdian) cities.

AFAICT, Japan is the only non-Western civilization/country to modernize and industrialize on their own terms without being colonized. Perry did force the country open, but once they were open they sent out people to see how Westerners did things and brought those lessons (and often Western experts) back and integrated them into Japanese society, leading to them becoming a legitimate world power within 50 years.

Its pretty accurate. China's continued existence as China as we know it through history basically came down to integration. They would get conquered time and time again by external invaders, but they still outnumbered the invaders who settled down 1,000-1, so a couple generations in, and it was just all Chinese again. Or, they'd bitch over who controlled the state power that was so pervasive, and fight bloody civil wars as a result. China's main advantage has always been its vast bureaucratic state and its ability to marshal said state at a scale that was difficult to achieve before modern communications technology, but it also lead to their consistent downfall as that centralized authority strangled local executive decision and lead to inaction or stupid action. That very same position is a massive disadvantage now, modern technology makes the more flexible, hands off military approach far superior as they can be effectively coordinated by near-peers instead of strict unquestioning hierarchies.

Its worth keeping in mind that the PLA is an extremely political organization in China, holding huge amounts of power and being well aware of it, and having huge swathes of its officer core being political aspirants looking for a way into a stronger political position in the Party. Their selection process is not towards competence, just towards the North Korean style dress generals with made up awards and medals. While I do think people would be surprised by how suicidally loyal a PLA grunt might be under the piles of chinese indoctrination, that willingness to sacrifice means little when you're serving under a wannabe political appointee who's just spending lives needlessly because it'll look better if he refuses to retreat until a higher casualty level than all the other units around him.

And the royals are much better than what most countries forced into democracy end up being. At least they're clear cut and limited in their corruption, the wide royal family structure leads to a better rate of officials interested in the thing they have control over, and a lifelong royal means you can be fairly sure that you won't have to renegotiate everything every few years to appease some new bumfuck political campaign. It also helps that its a locally respected power structure, elections seem to just confuse middle easterners and turn into gibsvoting, whereas "divine king" works well in highly religious areas with a history of them to look back over as a standard to hold the current king to.

There's a reason monarchies lasted as long as they did, and a lot of their advantages are still applicable today. The downsides being unaccountable power, shit like the journalist killings that you basically can't really put them to account for, and the risk of a royal going nuts and driving their country into a full hellscape civil war.

History has always been an escalating list of "first group to make this mistake" that are obviously bad ideas in retrospect, and I'm sure we'll be no different. The history of modern civilizations will be those grappling with rapid medical, economic and technological changes, and failing, until reasonably workable paths are found, as always by a trail of blood and horror.

Oddly enough I remember hearing some podcast about the downfall of Rome (Hardcore History I think) and the host said something along the lines of "Imagine men running around with permed hair as everything around them is looted and pillaged."

I don't think they were cutting their dicks off because back then a scraped knee could turn gangrenous. But if they had the medical technology I'm sure they'd have been doing it.
