Over reliance on mass media over the last six-plus decades, I'd guess. Most generations get talked up to promote some sort of idiotic political divide and break up the masses for more effective marketing.

In reality, generations differ greatly from one place to another. You can have a generation that only really exists in a particular city (a wave of births from immigrants to that specific city or a baby boom after a two-day power outage nine months earlier), while even on national levels you get a huge amount of variation in birth rates between one region and another. Plus people forget about in-between-generations, like the Oregon Trail Generation (born between Gen X and Millennials, typically 1982 to 1986).

It's actually much easier and usually more accurate to break generations down on the basis of technologies they're familiar with rather than a specific timeframe; if you remember the world before the Internet, you're Gen X or older; if you remember the world before the Iphone, you're a Millennial; if the word "Analog" sounds like a sexual fetish, you're a Zoomer.
 
Millennial here, though I'd never refer to myself as such. I've always thought using any broad generational descriptor like that is fucking retarded, and only disabled niggers use them.
