‘Eragon’ TV Series Adaptation in Development at Disney+ (EXCLUSIVE)

An “Eragon” live-action TV series is in early development at Disney+, Variety has learned exclusively from sources.

The series would be based on the Christopher Paolini young adult novel series “The Inheritance Cycle,” with “Eragon” being the first of the four books in that series.

According to sources, Paolini will serve as co-writer on the series. Bert Salke will executive produce under his Co-Lab 21 banner, with 20th Television producing. Salke is currently under an overall deal with Disney Television Studios, of which 20th TV is a part.

Reps for Disney and Paolini did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment.

“The Inheritance Cycle” tells the story of a farmboy named Eragon who discovers an egg that hatches into a dragon he names Saphira. Through their bond and the help of his mentor Brom, Eragon learns to be a Dragon Rider, an ancient order that had long been thought to be wiped out by the evil king Galbatorix. Eragon and Saphira set out to defeat Galbatorix and free the land of Alagaësia from his tyranny.

“Eragon” was first self-published in 2002 before it was republished by Knopf in 2003. It was followed by “Eldest” in 2005, “Brisingr” in 2008, and “Inheritance” in 2011. The whole series has proven to be incredibly popular, with over 41 million copies sold worldwide.

Should the project move forward, it would not be first time that “Eragon” has been adapted for the screen. The book was previously adapted into a film of the same name in 2006 with Ed Speleers as Eragon, Rachel Weisz as the voice of Saphira, Jeremy Irons as Brom, and John Malkovich as Galbatorix. The film was widely panned by critics upon its release and grossed approximately $250 million at the worldwide box office against a reported budget of $100 million. In 2021, fans of the books began using the hashtag #EragonRemake in an effort to get Disney to produce a series version given their disappointment with the film.

“Eragon” would also be the latest high-profile YA novel series to get adapted into a Disney+ series. The streamer is currently working on a series version of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson books starring Walker Scobell in the lead role.

Paolini is repped by WME and Writers House.

Note: An earlier version of the story stated Paolini would be co-showrunner on the series, but it is now understood that the project is in such early stages that no such decision has been made officially.

I remember that I read the first book only, the plot is an exact rip off of starwars a new hope, and the setting is straight up Tolkien's world, it is an average story and will probably turn to absolute shit like A Wheel of Time did under Amazon.

The only thing I remember of this film was that it had a gay looking dragon design, and that it came out the same time as superman returns and xmen 3, mostly because of this:

Wasn't this the book that only got popular because the author's parents worked in the publishing industry? I can't imagine that many people wanting to see an adaptation of it, but maybe the shitshow will be entertaining in a bad movie way. Oh wait not even shitty movies/tv shows are fun anymore.

To be entirely fair, remaking a failed film is exactly what remakes should do, rather than try and “modernize” classic films and shows. Remake the bad stuff to be good, not remake good to be subpar at best.

Not that I have any faith in Disney to pull this off, mind you.
Problem with Eragon is that you can't really make it "good". Too many people try to pretend like the movie sucked because it deviated from the book rather than because the source material is steaming dogshit. Even if modern Disney wasn't cancer incarnate they wouldn't be able to make this crap good unless they just ignored the story entirely and cribbed what they liked from the books to make their own stuff - sort of how Legend of the Seeker "adapted" The Sword of Truth series by basically ignoring 80% of it. And TSOT was still less creatively bankrupt than Eragon albeit with equally loathsome heroes.

I remember liking the first book back when it first came out.
It could probably be a good series if it was geared towards the right audience, but it's Disney in current year so it's going to be just another mediocre-at-best adaptation that no-one will remember a year after it ended.

Only saw the movie which was shit but good to see Disney using other ips that aren't cartoons, star wars or marvel for Disney+. If only they had some fresh ips and give them the budget and talent to be good.

The thread on ASOIAF had me remember Eragon for the first time in over 10 years, simply because people talked about lack of impact of early 2000s media and Eragon was a big thing that left no real legacy. Like GRRM.

The books were ok, but forgettable. People say they were bad but they were just extremely generic and I enjoyed them for what they were. They aren't worth a TV series, but it's Disney so them wasting money is good. If you have younger relatives you could give them a copy and not worry about any gay or transexual bullshit. All I remember was elves are vegetarians.

Fucking hell, I remember this movie tanked so damn hard it murdered any chances for any sequels back then.

Didn't the author's parents own a book publishing company, yet they marketed the book as if it was a JK Rowling situation of "everyone can write a book"?

The Eragon books were a non-entity at my schools growing up. Sure they were stacked on tables in the libraries but man nobody gave a phantom fuck about this series. It was recent filler to justify overloading shelves.

His parents were extremely loaded and poured most of the family's funds into making the book sell, yeah. The marketing gimmick was "Our genius 15 year old wrote this amazing fantasy epic!"

They would do stuff like dress him up in Renaissance attire and have him pitch it to schools and public libraries. Eventually a big publisher caught wind and smelled money. They leaned into the kid-genius angle really hard and gave the series a massive marketing push. It hit right around the YA craze and popped the epic fantasy cherry for a lot of young readers.

Nowadays most people realize the book is a functional ripoff of Star Wars and LOTRO -- with a dash of Wizards of Earthsea.

A TV series might not be terrible if they take heavy liberties with the source material, but I imagine with Paolini directly involved that won't happen.

The Disney version may be better for once!
It’s telling that they’re adapting something where the initial bar is already that low.

Fucking hell, I read these books years ago, and even younger me thought they were bland as hell. Points to the Rat if it can make something it gets its hands on better for once…

I read them when I was a kid and initially liked the first 2, but by the third even 12 year old me was like "man this shit is getting kind of repetitive and retarded."

I was thinking of the original movie but the book series wasn’t that great. It was nice to read a book by someone that was just a kid too.
