In the defence of The Great, it does explicitly acknowledge it's an "occasionally true story" and is not trying for historical accuracy. Anyone who watches the show and believes Yelizaveta Petrovna successfully domesticated a butterfly hivemind intelligence deserves to be misinformed. Also I have a soft spot for it because it showcases Nicholas Hoult and Sacha Dhawan and introduced me to Sebastian de Souza, so it gets a 10/10 on the AssignedEva "trashy titillating television" scale.

Bridgerton likewise is enjoyable because they basically just said "We like the aesthetic of frilly Regency dramas but don't want to be bogged down on the details". The costume designer literally insisted on no bonnets. There's some fun historical fashion youtuber videos talking about how the costume design is great because it's not trying to be historically accurate and they use costuming to communicate things about the characters.

The Crown, and also Spencer (the recent Diana biopic) are both very enjoyable but largely complete fabrications, which makes them a bit more insidious. They do make the Royal family look bad though, which is refreshing and deserved. They went out of their way to make the staging and costuming very accurate because they had the budget to do it.

These shows differ massively from "it's Shakespeare, so I'm smart, but what if Prince Hal was trans". I'm vaguely interested in the costuming decisions involved in Ollie's play - theatre has less of an emphasis on verisimilitude but are they going to go full modern outfits or attempt to ape historical clothing? The poster suggests a bit of both, with Ollie's ridiculous attempt at an e-girl outfit mixed with a gauntlet and sword.

I wonder if the enigma that is Brian will be involved style wise lol. Probably at least be approached, Tube will want to keep the reigns as tight as possible.

not sure if you mean HBO's Catherine the Great with Helen Mirren or Hulu's The Great with Elle Fanning, but oh my GOD do I hate what The Great has done. Catherine as a wide eyed ingénue who shies away from blood and logistics... Peter as a charmer with a stormy past and sexual charisma... I can stand historical revisionism, even enjoy it when the revision is interesting, but The Great seems dead set on growing duller with every choice. Leave it to American TV to twist a genuinely complex dynamic into yet another pure and beautiful girlboss finding herself pulled breathlessly into the orbit of a more powerful man. Zzzzz.

From what I remember of season one — I haven't watched the second, only absorbed the chatter in bits and pieces — it was clear that the writers were captivated by Peter and happy to diminish everyone else in order to prop up their bizarre fascination with him. The writers of Reign did this too — romanticized the fragile, ineffectual Francis II into a conventional leading man. The Great at least lets Peter be a brat, which I suppose he was, but he's a brat in a Hollywood way, a viable antihero way, a way that plants him at the center of the story and makes the other characters revolve around Peter the Supreme. Catherine can't find him pathetic and repulsive, as the real one did; she has to be bewitched by him even while hating his cruelty. Her lovers (historical and fictional) can't pull her eyes away; they have to be thoroughly desexualized and emasculated so as not to challenge Peter, The Number One Man. I don't think it's an accident that both Leo and Orlo are played by men shorter than Elle Fanning, while Nicholas Hoult is taller. It's so petty and stupid and shouldn't matter, but in this show it does. Plus the stress on Leo being sterile and officially sanctioned by Peter in contrast to the historical Catherine not giving a fuck about her lovers threatening his authority and bloodline. It's all there to build a structure with Peter on top — not just of the monarchy, but of the narrative and the visuals as well. He has to win every fight. It's boring. They won't kill him until the series finale, and then they'll spin it as a noble death charged with pathos somehow.

I have to conclude that the writers hated Catherine as she was and only warmed to her as they revised her, as someone softer and sillier — someone who'd love their Peter. They betrayed everything interesting about her to turn her into a more conventionally likable plucky main girl. I can't forgive it. It's a shame, because the show looks gorgeous, very Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette, and it tries hard to be funny and often succeeds... but I can't turn off the part of me that resents it for revising history to be less strange.
