I’m curious, though. Is it really D&D itself, or just trans largely being made up of dysfunctional nerdy males?
Note: I'm an outsider looking in, I don't D&D myself.
Back in the day, it was harder to organize a group of basement dwellers together for some good old tabletop RP. Before the internet took off, you had to either know a group of people, introduce it to a group of receptive people, or put out a public ad for meeting up and D&Ding, maybe even in the public library. Meet ups are now easier to organize thanks to a greater acceptance of nerd culture, a larger interest in genre fiction from the general population, the satanic panic crashing, & the internet making it so you don't even have to do shit in person anymore & can go online. Online RP became a more popular hobby over the years with kid friendly websites like Neopets and others like it having play pretend rp, video game rpgs introduced mechanics to kids and teens in a simple way, and a refinement of rules in D&D itself that helped new players get into it more (even if old players didn't like the changes, sorry old neckbeards).
Fantasy roleplay with other nerds is usually hoe trans people get attracted to transitioning in the first place: you go to a social site or chat, RP with them, and live out your escapist fantasies of not being a socially awkward nerd. You might just find a group of people who like RP a lot, to the point where they try to gain aspects of their characters IRL... and sometimes those people are trans or worse, trans coomers (the former is using trans as an escape as compared to the later who uses it for both escape AND cooming).
To decide your identity, how you want to be perceived, to others is a great magnet for them. Socially awkward people tend to become nerds, socially awkward people are more likely to troon out, and socially awkward people will jump on nerdy bandwagons so they don't feel left out and hopefully make friends, thus the overlap.
Apparently, Tavistock is getting replaced with about 8 regional centres, which could reduce wait times. While this does sound bad, Anthony sheds some light on this situation.

Based TERF Island government! They've buck broken Anthony and made him a doomer!
Man, if only Erin Reed was capable of reading transcripts from the court cases without his eyes glazing over or hitting "ctrl+f" to find only the juiciest and most justified of points, he'd know why there was changes. And if only he had access to news articles about the UK's medical system in general. If only he could read. What a sad state he's in.
Aside from providing them cover, I think a lot of these people hope they can become queer elders to a generation of puberty-blocked trans kids they think will look female enough for them to want to fuck.
I think it's also living vicariously through the youth: if only I had the chance to stop biology and rewrite my genes with the correct hormones for puberty, I could have become an adult with several awful health problems and maybe 5-10 years of "passing" a perfectly passing man/woman with the friendships, body, and life of my dreams... You can see parents do it through their children with jobs and hobbies, turning their child into the child musician they wanted to be but couldn't.
There's also the troons who genuinely think of the children and have empathy for others but don't know the true bad side effects of childhood reassignment. We hardly cover those here on the farms since we like laughing at self-centered people more than empathetic ones. They might feature in a community watch thread for a dumb take, but they're boring (and that's a good thing to be to the farms).
There's totally a lot of AGPs who do it because of sexual reasons, of course. Paraphernalias often come in clusters, so the leap from AGP to other perversions is a small gap.
