Can confirm. Knew a guy who got laid off from his job as a database programmer, and was then immediately hired back on as a contractor making more money with better hours. Turns out a guy who has been writing code since the 70's cannot be replaced by H-1Bs and trannies in programmer socks. Decades of non-investment and under-investment in American talent has utterly fucked corporations, and if it wasn't for the fact there's going to be nasty repercussions for the rest of us from their hard fall I'd be laughing at it without a care. Not that I won't be laughing, but it will be to help kill my own pain through schadenfreude.

Why would corporate America invest in talent when it doesn't result in higher returns next quarter or even during this fiscal year? It's up to the plebs to do that.

Shit happened to my mom. Decades of experience but no college degree made her unhireable in HR departments. So she became a real estate agent where her people skills have enabled her to make more money than she ever did in HR. It wouldn't be wise to give them a reason.

Much of this attitude, in my opinion, stems from the fact that ultimately the people in charge or running these big firms really have no long-term investment or loyalty to the success for said firm. They came in from another company, decided to do exactly what they did at that company regardless if it makes sense for the new place they're working at, and the only thing that matters is next quarter's growth numbers (rather than whether or not the firm has a long term profitability). And then after a few years, they'll jump ship again with their gold-plated compensation packages and move on to the next firm.

What's worse about now is that majority of these companies won't even take the time to call you for an interview, or treat you like a human or act like one themselves. Almost everything is automated now to the point where they look suspiciously like scams. You get automated emails that tell you to go to this link to schedule an appointment, or they immediately want your info like SSN. Personaly, if it's something other cisco or microsoft team meeting, I don't even bother with the email and just delete it. And I especially only dial the call-in number unless it's something like a zoom meeting. Otherwise I'm VERY cautious about what kind of replies I get. You can't fucking trust anyone these days.

I got not one, but two thank-you emails for a charitable donation, but a multi-million dollar org can't email me to let me know I didn't get the job. Lord if we win the billion dollar lottery I'll spend my days applying for jobs then ghosting them (after tending to my yuge animal sanctuary ofc).
